Greetings TV Garth readers! After a long delay, I'm finally looking back at all the over-the-air TV mayhem viewed at my home in Markham, Ontario from May through June 2015! Here are the anchors, anecdotes and antenna reception I saw!
May 2, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Tara Lipinksi and Johnny Weir were in full bloom reporting from the Peacock Paddock at the Kentucky Derby!
May 4, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...Glenn Johnson, Don Alhart and Mike Catalana appeared in a WHAM promo for ABC’s World News Tonight!
Ginny Ryan joined Don Alhart and his colourful magic eye tie for the news!
May 5, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 21.2 WXXI-W (RF16.2)...Gwen Ifill appeared on the PBS World subchannel, which along with Create, upgraded to 16 x 9 widescreen SD!
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...Pop culture parodies like Top Business Owner are a highlight of WXXI’s original production Biz Kid$!
May 7, 2015:
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...Eating at Perkins is a tradition whenever I’m in Erie for Drenched Fur!
Mike Ruzzi, Amanda Post and Jay Puskar delivered the evening news!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3)...I was delighted to SEE promotion for the OHL Championship with the Oshawa Generals battling the Erie Otters!
Gary Drapcho, Emily Welsh and Julie Coates anchored that night!
- Springville, NY, 67.1 WBBZ (RF7)...Roam if you want to, roam around the…Buffalo Roadhouse Grill? It’s a sizzling place!
WBBZ’s main channel sometimes runs original shows or sitcoms like King of Queens instead of MeTV programming. (The full MeTV lineup airs on a subchannel!)
May 8, 2015:
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)…Longtime reporter Paul Wagner made an appearance!
The OHL ad with the Erie Otters versus the Oshawa Generals popped up again and I wondered if Alanis Morissette would at the game performing her mega smash, “You Otter Know”!
WICU, seen below with Kara Coleman and Mark Soliday, is always Trend-ing on my blog!
May 10, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.2 WGRZ2.2 (RF33.2)...One Day At A Time featured Glenn Scarpelli, son of Archie Comics artist Henry Scarpelli! (Check out Glenn’s animated adventures!) He also appeared in Jennifer Slept Here, came out as a gay hottie and has had a very interesting showbiz life!
May 13, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...Reporter Lauren Hall was at the Star 102.5 studios that morning! As a kid, I adored the station when it was known as Majic 102, WMJQ!
- Toronto, ON, 9.1 CFTO (RF9)...CTV’s eTalk talked to CITY’s Shauna Hunt after she confronted hecklers defending the obnoxious “F--- her right in the P----” trend.

I met Shauna back in 2013 when she was covering The 519’s Starry Night event and she is awesome!
Ben Mulroney also introduced a story about the backlash to the Jem & The Holograms movie trailer. (I saw the film later that year and liked it!)

- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...In Line For Anne Frank was a fascinating documentary about the diverse groups of people drawn to visit the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam!
May 20, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...The Late Show with David Letterman came to a close after 22 years on CBS!
May 26, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...The Real joined the afternoon chat frenzy in 2013 alongside The View, The Talk and The Social!
- Toronto, ON, 40.1 CJMT (RF40)...Viraj Wanigasekera wiggled his way onto my screen in the documentary Belly Dance Man: From Canada to Cairo!
June 1, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Caitlyn Jenner officially came out as trans and, despite messy personal politics, it led the media to cover more transgender stories. ABC’s Nightline profiled Jenner and detailed the community’s movement.
Author and activist Jennifer Finney Boylan also appeared!
June 6, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Darien Lake made a splash with their Concert Series ad on WKBW! (That station logo had me singing!)
June 7, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...The cool, refreshing waters of Darien Lake were also hosting a CW23 Day with a One Direction contest!
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...The Tony Awards were Defying Gravity with hosts Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming out to celebrate Broadway magic! (I also wouldn’t mind an adult parody giving out trophies to all the hot guys named Anthony…)
June 8, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...The Late Late Show With James Corden had the hilarious Nuzzle Waaa? with Thomas Middleditch, Nick Offerman, Reggie Watts & Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper!
June 9, 2015:
- Peterborough, ON, 12.1 CHEX (RF12)...I had to double CHEX what I saw in this Ontario Carpet Supermart ad! It appears an (ex?) employee next to Elvis actually got blurred out of the commercial!
- Kitchener, ON, 13.1 CKCO (RF13)...Conan was still going strong after all the drama from 2010!
- Buffalo, NY, 49.2 GetTV [WNYO] (RF49.2)...I loved Lucy in the classic comedy The Fuller Brush Girl!
June 11, 2015:
- Detroit, MI, 4.1 WDIV (RF45)...After watching Kimberly Gill for years on WEWS, it was great seeing her pop up on WDIV with Steve Garagiola!
The weather forecast just shoots out of Ben Bailey’s fingertips!
I’m always app-y to see Local 4 drop in!
- Flint, MI, 28.2 WCMZ-28 (RF28.2)...Central Michigan University encouraged people to follow their GLISS!
June 12, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...You may have to switch some letters around, but professor Matthew puts the “fine” in Feinberg!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Janet Snyder hosts WNY Living, but I already knew her from radio’s Kiss 98.5 with Nicholas Picholas!
- Batavia, NY, 51.3 IONLife (RF23.3)...I had my own box of memories of Yummy Mummy’s Erica Ehm from when she was a VJ on Much Music!
- Toronto, ON, 41.1 CIII (RF41)...Carolyn Mackenzie and Rosey Edeh looked bow-tiful that morning!
June 13, 2015:
- Utica, NY, 20.1 WUTR (RF30)...I was an Eyewitness to this fabulous bumper for WUTR’s News!
June 19, 2015:
- Erie, PA, 54.1 WQLN (RF50)...Road Trips had viewers beaming about the upcoming “Lighthouses of Lake Erie” tour!
Like Clearfield, PA’s WPSU, there was an Our Town series on WQLN profiling the local towns in their viewing area!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...R.W. Petruso Hearing & Audiology Center paired with WICU to provide viewers with Closed Captioning!
June 20, 2015:
- Erie, PA, 12.2 WBEP (RF12.2)...There was a cool “Fill The Backpack” promo with WSEE teaming with Wegmans to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania! (As well, it shows off the station’s “This Is Home” campaign, also used by Buffalo’s WGRZ!)
Keep on (fire) truckin’ Miss Maura Sirianni!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...A.D. The Bible Continues was sponsored locally on WICU by Carol Ann’s Home Décor & Gifts!
John Stehlin originally worked for WICU in the early 90s (and landed on Dick Clark’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes) before returning in 2012!
June 21, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...7 ABC wished viewers a Happy Father’s Day!
June 22, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 17.2 Think [WNED] (RF43.2)...World was celebrating LGBT Pride with awesome documentaries throughout June!
First up that evening was Anyone & Everyone!
I Am followed immediately after!
June 23, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...Rochester PBS usually airs educational series overnight, so I’ve seen the fabulous Liz Torres on TV411 many times! (I remember her from The John Larroquette Show!)
WXXI was also promoting the upcoming event A Capitol Fourth!
June 24, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 41.1 CIII (RF41)...Mario Cantone was sexy in Meredith Viera’s city that afternoon!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...There was also a smorgasbord of handsome men to view on Ellen! I was as flustered as Sofía Vergara!
Nick Jonas also sent my heart fluttering that day!
WGRZ showed off plenty of Buffalove with their version of “This Is Home”!
Jeff Preval delivered an explosive report that sparked much debate!
June 26, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...7 ABC was also bursting with Sizzling Summer suggestions!
- Buffalo, NY, 49.1 WNYO (RF49)...Airport Plaza Jewelers briefly had a program called The Showroom Presents with Brian Dickman interviewing celebs like Divatastic singer Tamia!
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Despite her feminism being complicated and problematic at times, Rose McGowan has been a huge champion in confronting sexism and challenging Hollywood!
June 29, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...StoryCorps covered Theresa Burroughs’ fight for her voting rights during the horrific Jim Crow era!
- Hamilton, ON, 35.1 CHCJ (RF35)...The fabulous Tituss Burgess from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt appeared on James Corden!
June 30, 2015:
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...I raised my glass to WKTV’s Morning Mug Club!
Katrina Smith, Jason Powles and Bill Kardas anchored that morning!
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...I have fuzzy memories of a Gary Pools & Leisure ad from the 80s with a breathy woman talk-singing something like, “Hot tubs are…Gary’s got it!” Yet, I can’t find it anywhere online!
