Greetings TV Garth readers! After a long delay, I'm finally looking back at all the over-the-air TV mayhem viewed at my home in Markham, Ontario from January through March 2015! Here are the anchors, anecdotes and antenna reception I saw!
Jan. 1, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Heather Ly wished viewers a Happy New Year!
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39) and 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...Husband and Wife team Emily Guggenmos and Lou Raguse joined News 4 back in 2012! (They left for Minneapolis later in 2015.)
Jan. 26, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 40.1 CJMT (RF40)...Omni 2 ran the documentary Nenshi 4 Mayor about Naheed Nenshi’s journey towards triumph in Calgary! (He is awesome!)
Jan. 30, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 41.1 CIII (RF41)...Forget BB-8! CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais brought out DB8e (from Antenna’s Direct) while announcing a renewed commitment to over-the-air transmitters! (He also stunned the industry by allowing Canadian cable and satellite providers to air US Superbowl commercials without substitution on their American affiliates.)
Feb. 1, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.2 WGRZ2.2 (RF33.2)...The special effects on Small Wonder were certainly stretched to their limits at times!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...NBC was airing the Big Game and once again I was watching it over-the-air with my family!
There was a cute ad with classic Today Show footage showing Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel confused about the internet, just before we see them in the present bewildered by a BMW!
Mindy Kaling treated herself to ice cream while feeling “invisible” in a Nationwide commercial!
Viewers also got the joy of Katy Perry’s Halftime Show with the infamous Left Shark!
Feb. 5, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.3 WGRZ2.3 (RF33.3)...The Justice Network replaced WeatherNation on WGRZ and I didn’t think much of it until I saw Masterminds tell the story of Storme Aerison!
Unfortunately, the program is rather transphobic in presenting the details of Storme (and her various aliases) and how she allegedly conned people into working on her modeling calendars.
Fraud is wrong, but getting arrested, posting bail and immediately flying to Tahiti for a photo shoot afterwards is some epic chutzpah!
[tw: transphobia, deadnaming] Storme, in my opinion, presents as a transgender woman. So it’s a shame that she is frequently misgendered in articles and reports such as this KOAA profile. Her actions may be questionable and having multiple aliases complicates that, but there should at least be an attempt to respect her gender identity.
Feb. 8, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...I wanted to give producers of The Slap a high five for the drama, trauma and eleganza in their promos! I was all: “Is this really a full length mini-series about Zachary Quinto slapping someone’s bratty kid?”
Feb. 26, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 17.2 Think [WNED] (RF43.2)...Locked Out: The Fall of Massive Resistance (seen below with Dr. Patricia Turner) covered the sad history of Southern schools in the 1950s that chose to close down rather than desegregate.
Feb. 28, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...Brittni Smallwood talked about how Frozen February was, but I think people should just Let It Go!
March 5, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Daybreak brought us Pete Gallivan, Melissa Holmes and the fabulous Maria Genero!
March 6, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...Andrew Baglini 4 Warned me about getting too excited when he mentions frontal systems on the way!
March 7, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...Tati’s Hotel is a bonkers delight featuring talking phones…
…Pride themed guest rooms…
…and a concierge named Mr. Snapweazle (Tom Turner) who should definitely swing by the Men At Play offices at some point in the future!
March 12, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...WXXI’s late 80s original production Reading Way had it all, including a friendly librarian…
…a mirror image of my own appearance and mannerisms from that era…
…bubbly, yet bizarre bathtub adventures….
…and dogs reading books in a Veterinarian’s waiting room!
March 13, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...Good Day Rochester featured Jennifer Johnson, Doug Emblidge, Marty Snyder and Norma Holland!
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...News 8 talked about the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with Mark Gruba, Renae Skinner and Amy Young!
Weather or not it was going to rain on our parade, Stacey Pensgen was there to March us through it all!
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...Drew Bagnall (of the Rochester Americans) and Ginny Ryan promoted the “Pink the Rink” event raising proceeds for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester!
March 21, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...Dave Greber joined News 4!
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...March Madness left everyone floored!
March 22, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.2 Bounce [WNLO] (RF32.2)...Robin Givens jumped in as host of Forgive or Forget when the second season was revamped!
March 28, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 57.1 CITY (RF44)...I saw a jaw droppingly epic, yet problematic episode of Get Stuffed. For starters, Josh Rice and Kalyn Miles come to Georgia for the Summer Redneck Games and land in a sea of Confederate flag clothing.
A local says of Kalyn, “If she don’t whip that ugly white boy, I’m gonna whip her!” My discomfort mirrored Kalyn’s, despite Josh trying to distract me with his shirtlessness!
March 29, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 5.1 CBLT (RF20)...I cleansed my palette with Mamma Yamma and Scott Russell talking about sports!
- Buffalo, NY, 23.2 Bounce [WNLO] (RF32.2)...When I saw Bounce promoting Mann & Wife, I felt like one of my punny fever dreams had actually come true!
Stay tuned to TV Garth for more fierce, fabulous, frequency gazing!
