Welcome to TV Garth!

Ever since I was a kid, I loved antennas and TV reception. It was always a thrill to hook up an antenna and see what stations I could get, and see if I could pick up anything from a far distance. With the transition to digital broadcasting happening, my love for OTA (over the air) reception came back and this blog will focus on what channels I'm able to receive via antenna from my home just outside of Toronto, Canada. Plus there may be occasional commentaries on shows that I see while adjusting my reception.

Reception Reports: Nov. 10-11, 2009 including Rochester and Erie!

The November tropo enhancements continued as the month went on! This was my adventure receiving TV stations from Rochester, NY and Erie, PA at my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada on November 10-11, 2009. I captured newscasts from WROC and WICU, as well as stories about Veteran's Day and Gay Marriage struggles in Western New York. (Scott Fearing of the Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley is pictured above!)

Reception Reports: Nov. 8-9, 2009 including the return of Utica's WKTV along with Erie & Rochester!

The warmer temperatures in early November really helped the long distance TV reception bounce back! This was my adventure receiving TV stations from Rochester, NY / Utica, NY and Erie, PA at my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada on November 8-9, 2009. This was WKTV's first appearance at my home since September. (Check out their awesome meterologist Jill Reale above!) I captured their newscast, as well as some of the national morning shows from Erie, PA the next morning. The big news was the passing of President Obama's health care bill. I also got excited to see a segment on WKTV about Price Chopper, since I didn't know they had them in the US. But later I found out the US Price Chopper is not connected to the Canadian grocery chain of the same name.

Happy Thanksgiving (USA)!

Happy Thanksgiving (my Mom is American so I use that as my excuse to celebrate the holiday twice)! Here are a few Thanksgiving related shots I captured from Buffalo, NY stations WGRZ, WIVB and WKBW this week. I also hope to wake up in time to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC, but I love my sleep, so I might just catch the highlights later.

Reception Reports: Nov. 7-8, 2009 with Michigan Mayhem! Bad Axe, Flint, Kalamazoo, & Detroit as well as Erie & Rochester!

This was my adventure receiving TV stations from Bad Axe, MI / Flint, MI / Kalamazoo, MI / Detroit, MI / Erie, PA and Rochester, NY on November 7-8, 2009 from my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada. As you can see from the cities listed, it was a giant opening to Michigan. I was shocked to find signals coming from cities I had never picked up before! I got a more extensive look at Bad Axe's WDCQ, and got three new channels this night (WSMH, WFUM and WLLA!) It was also a unique night, as I picked up many different signals on the same RF channels at different times. RF45 brought WLLA, WDIV and WROC. RF16 brought in both WSMH and WXXI. RF28 brought in WFUM as well as WUHF. An amazing (and unexpected) night of DXing this late in the season!

Reception Reports: Oct. 29, 2009 A day of Erie, PA during the regional US elections and Halloween mayhem!

This was my adventure receiving TV stations from Erie, PA on October 29, 2009 from my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada. It was a unique day as the signals from WICU and WQLN were there for almost the whole day. They did drop in and out frequently, but pretty much from 5am - 12am they popped up. I captured lots of news coverage, and some of the very patriotic sets used for the regional US elections, along with political ads for many candidates. (Including some crazy attack ads!) There were also lots of Halloween related commercials and segments! The tropo enhancements may have been reduced in October, but this was a great day for Erie DXing!

In late October, my DXing picked up a bit with the return of Rochester, NY and Erie, PA stations to my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada. The Flickr set linked below covers pics from Oct. 21-27. There were lots of Halloween commercials, and I captured news from WROC, WHAM, and WICU. Plus this set also has some good shots the new logo from Rochester's WXXI.

Reception Reports: Oct. 3-18, 2009 Tropo gets mostly frozen out, and snow hits Buffalo!

As you can see from the pic above, it got VERY cold in October. (I love the fact that Buffalo's WGRZ did their weather alert from a Tim Horton's parking lot!) The tropospheric enhancements were very slim in October compared the glorious Summer days. The Flickr gallery linked below is a compilation of the slight tropo that did come in between October 3-18, 2009 at my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada. I also included some local shots from CIII (Global) to illustrate that they finally got their PSIP working, plus a few shots from semi-local WGRZ in Buffalo showing just how cold October got (and why the tropo was so severely reduced!) October did bring some Rochester, including PBS stalwart WXXI, which has recently introduced a new logo. It also appears their subchannel on 21-3 is no longer connected with ThinkBright, and runs Create programs overnight now.

Honouring Remembrance Day (Canada) and Veteran’s Day (USA)

I’ve pulled together a few of my pics from Canadian and US stations to honour Remembrance Day (Canada) and Veteran’s Day (USA). (The Canadian pics showcase how all news anchors wore poppies to mark the occasion.) Let us pause to remember and thank the brave men and women who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy!
