Greetings TV Garth readers! Here’s a look back at all the over-the-air TV mayhem viewed at my new home in Markham, Ontario, Canada from June 2017! (I now live on one of the upper floors of a high-rise, which greatly enhances reception!) There was plenty of Pride plus Rochester, Syracuse, Erie, Detroit, Cleveland and local faves! Stay tuned for anchors, anecdotes and antenna reception, oh my!
June 11, 2017:
- Detroit, MI, 4.1 WDIV (RF45)...Wallside Windows was one of the first businesses I saw targeting Ottawa, Ontario through Detroit advertising. (Ottawa gets WDIV and other Detroit stations via cable!)
This Inside Edition ad doubled as a 4midable WDIV station ID!
- Toronto, ON, 5.1 CBLT (RF20)...CBC promoted Canada 150 and Aboriginal History Month, as Indigenous communities called out the country’s problematic history of oppression and colonization.
Fantasies do come true, as Shahir Massoud sashayed through and delivered The Goods to three men in blindfolds!
- Barrie, ON, 3.1 CKVR (RF10)...CTV News Barrie interviewed Samantha Kinoshameg of the Barrie Native Friendship Centre! The organization strives to “improve the quality of life for all Indigenous / Métis people in the area.”
- Hamilton, ON, 35.1 CHCJ (RF35)...Mike Arsalides anchored CTV News Barrie that evening! (CHCJ is one of two repeaters for CKVR!)
June 12, 2017:
- Woodstock, ON, 31.1 CITY-DT-2 (RF31)...Viewers always want Moore of the fabulous Tracy on Cityline!
- Toronto, ON, 9.1 CFTO (RF9)...The awesome Gabourey Sidibe got Social with her new book This Is Just My Face: Try Not To Stare!
- Midland, ON, 7.1 CIII-DT-7 (RF7)...New Channel Alert…Gail Vaz-Oxlade’s advice always makes cents on Til Debt Do Us Part! (This was also my first time catching the digital version of Global’s Midland transmitter!)
June 13, 2017:
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...Scotty Ginett organized a memorial at the Bachelor Forum to honor victims of the horrific Pulse nightclub shooting on the one year anniversary of the tragedy.
Amy Hudak, Norma Holland and Ashley Doerzbacher were easy and Seabreeze-y during Good Day Rochester!
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...It was a Good Morning in America with Michael Strahan, Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulous and Amy Robach!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...It was also nice to see Savannah Guthrie, Carson Daly and Al Roker Today!
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...Stacey Pensgen, Adam Chodak and Maureen McGuire anchored News 8 at 11!
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...I would love to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what I want! However, I don’t think Santa Motors Inc. is that kind of establishment! (I’m going on the naughty list, aren’t I?)
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...The fierce Janet Mock was Surpassing Certainty on Late Night With Seth Meyers!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.2 WSTQ (RF24)...It always feels like Summer’s just around the corner when I see FX Caprara auto infomercials!
I liked that WSTQ still uses CW’s “TV To Talk About” graphics for promos, including the one for Mike & Molly below!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...Matt Knoedler was on the scene!
Amanda never leaves her Post when she’s anchoring with Mike Ruzzi!
Oops, Brittany Lauffer did it again, giving viewers coverage they could count on!
John Stehlin was talking temps over a shot of magnificent Millcreek!
June 14, 2017:
- Akron, OH, 55.3 Movies! [WBNX] (RF30)...Jane Fonda was stunning in Barbarella! (That angel is pretty heavenly, too!) But the moment I’m most Fonda of is when Jane became an accidental dance diva on Bob Sinclar’s Gym Tonic (Thomas Bangalter Mix)!
- Akron, OH, 55.4 H&I [WBNX] (RF30)...Heroes & Icons offered up full frontal Ferengi in this Star Trek: Deep Space Nine promo!
- Akron, OH, 55.1 WBNX (RF30)...WBNX presented The Funnies, and I was pretty animated when I captured this station ID!
- Cleveland, OH, 61.1 WQHS (RF34)...La Doble Vida De Estela Carrillo sounded like double trouble! (That cowboy certainly makes viewers giddy up!)
- Cleveland, OH, 61.2 UNIMAS [WQHS] (RF34)...I screamed “Gimme Gimme Más” a la Britney Spears upon seeing this fabuloso station ID!
- Erie, PA, 54.3 WQLN-S2 (RF50)...PBS’ Reel South presented Hillevi Loven’s Deep Run, which documents Cole Ray Davis’ life as a trans man in rural North Carolina! (Also, check out that fierce artwork below!)
- Erie, PA, 54.2 WQLN-S1 (RF50)...PBS had to Create opportunities for pledge drives wherever they could!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...Kara Coleman anchored Erie News Now!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24)...I didn’t realize how strong the beef was between Wegmans and Tops until my Rochester friends grilled me over it! (“Lettuce be friends,” said the tasty EZ Meal!)
- Detroit, MI, 4.1 WDIV (RF45)...Evrod Cassimy and Rhonda Walker’s report really bugged me that day!
Dr. Frank McGeorge is great, but this topic was bound to leave viewers ticked off!
- Detroit, MI, 20.1 WMYD (RF21)...The Bachelorette’s Jonathan Holloway drilled viewers in all the right ways with his “Home Pros” segments for WMYD and WXYZ!
The WXYZ news team, including Dave LewAllen and Glenda Lewis, delivers 7 Action News at 10 on sister station WMYD!
WXYZ is hard to catch from Markham, so I enjoyed WMYD keeping me informed with Brad Galli, Dave LewAllen, Glenda Lewis and Dave Rexroth!
- Akron, OH, 55.1 WBNX (RF30)...I hadn’t seen Who’s The Boss in years, so this was a nostalgic moment during my own “brand new life!”
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24)...I was excited to capture NBC 3’s revamped station ID during Today In Central New York!
“Wayne’s Traveling Tailgate” featured Limp Lizard BBQ & Catering, not to be confused with a band that appeared on Jem & The Holograms!
- Detroit, MI, 4.1 WDIV (RF45)...Mara MacDonald reported on customers who had to stop relying on that body-ody-ody shop because it was busted for drugs!
Hank Winchester is always willing to Help on Local 4!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.2 WSTQ (RF24)...The views and opinions expressed by TV Garth are that WSTQ’s infomercial IDs are awesome!
June 15, 2017:
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24)...Erendira Wallenda took flight and made it by the skin of her teeth in a daring helicopter stunt over Niagara Falls!
Molly Matott, Jeremy Miller and Lisa Spitz made a great 3some that day!
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...I was happy to see Teej Jenkins hosting Arts In Focus after Assignment: The World ended in 2013! (Check out her awesome comment on one of my previous blogs!)
WXXI was promoting Protect My Public Media which seemed more urgent than ever!
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...I once passed by DioGuardi Auto Sales during an epic road trip to Rochester back in 2013!
Mark Gruba and Allison Warren anchored WROC’s News 8 at Sunrise!
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...News 4 sent Brittni Smallwood and Jordan Williams to Niagara Falls to cover “Wallenda Wonder”! (A.k.a. “Erendira Prince” to those who know her secret identity!)
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Channel 2 also had coverage of the latest “Flying Wallenda” with Pete Gallivan and Melissa Holmes!
June 16, 2017:
- Detroit, MI, 4.1 WDIV (RF45)...Today was the perfect time for Shania Twain to promote her new album Now! (I got to see Shania live back in 2015 and she did impress me much!)
- Detroit, MI, 4.1 WDIV (RF45)...Chuck Gaidica and Tati Amare were Live on Local 4 with some D-licious treats!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24)...Matt Mulcahy anchored NBC 3 News at 11!
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...Independent Lens presented Shaleece Haas’ documentary Real Boy, covering the journey of trans teen Bennett!
With the waves of reception coming through, it definitely felt like a Summer of Adventure!
- Syracuse, NY, 9.1 WSYR (RF17)...I would never say “Bye Bye Bye” to “Fun & Games” with Lance Bass, seen here in a promo for The $100,000 Pyramid!
- Syracuse, NY, 9.2 WSYR-2 (RF17)...NewsChannel 9 sped through with this van-tastic promo!

- Rochester, NY, 21.2 WXXI-W (RF16)...Limited Partnership aired as part of World Channel’s LGBT Pride programming! The moving documentary traced the historical journey of Richard Adams and Tony Sullivan to have their relationship legally recognized!

- Buffalo, NY, 2.2 WGRZ2-2 (RF33)...Antenna TV’s back to back episodes of Mr. Belvedere served hot “lewks” and plenty of #PrideGoals!
