Greetings TV Garth readers! After a long delay, I'm finally looking back at all the over-the-air TV mayhem viewed at my home in Markham, Ontario from October through December 2013! Here are the anchors, anecdotes and antenna reception I saw!
Oct. 9, 2013:
- Erie, PA, 54.1 WQLN (RF50)...Gloria Estefan turned WQLN around and they Conga'd right into my house!
- Erie, PA, 54.2 WQLN-S1 (RF50.2)...Like Donna Summer, WQLN was also On The Radio!
Oct. 10, 2013:
- London, ON, 51.1 CHCH (RF51)...I don't need an excuse to show pics of Toronto's famous Sam The Record Man!
- Red Lion, PA, 49.1 WGCB (RF30)...New Channel Alert...This was an unusual catch! WGCB is a family oriented independent station serving the Susquehanna Valley region of Pennsylvania! (Their subchannel is MeTV!)
- Pittsburgh, PA, 11.1 WPXI (RF48)...I remembered Joe Arena from his days on Buffalo's WIVB!
The Arena also had room for Katherine Amenta that morning!
- Pittsburgh, PA, 4.1 WTAE (RF51)...I felt like I won the lottery with this unique station ID!
Janelle Hall and Kelly jumped into the Frey alongside Steve MacLaughlin! (And if WTAE and WPXI ever had a charity competition, "Hall vs Arena" would be epic!)
- Pittsburgh, PA, 11.1 WPXI (RF48)...WPXI's Severe Weather Team includes Scott Harbaugh, Stephen Cropper and Kevin Benson!
- Pittsburgh, PA, 4.1 WTAE (RF51)...I noticed "satisfries" during a road trip to Maine, so it was funny seeing them served up on TV shortly after getting home!
- Greensburg, PA, 40.1 WPCB (RF50)...WPCB is a slightly rarer catch for me, since Erie's WQLN usually blocks it!
- Johnstown, PA, 6.1 WJAC (RF34)... Bill Brown, Lindsay Ward and Jim Burton were maxing out my signal meter that day!
- Pittsburgh, PA, 4.1 WTAE (RF51)...I almost thought Andrew Stockey was exclaiming "Social media rules!" but the story was really about etiquette.
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...Trisha Goddard was poised and polished while dealing with mama drama!
- Erie, PA, 66.1 WFXP (RF22)...Trisha's guests should have gone on Family Feud to work out their issues!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...Rob Wilson left WICU not too long after this.
- Erie, PA, 66.1 WFXP (RF22) and Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...It was neat seeing the new Arsenio Hall Show carried on many of the same stations that ran it the first time around!
- Cleveland, OH, 5.1 WEWS (RF15) with Andy Baskin!
- Paris, ON, 6.1 CIII (RF17) with Anthony Farnell!
- Cleveland, OH, 5.1 WEWS (RF15)...This Good Morning Cleveland promo featured Jackie Zabielski, Mike Dunston and Macie Jepson (with hand on hip divaness!)
- Cleveland, OH, 61.1 WQHS (RF34) with Univision's Enrique Acevedo!
- Akron, OH, 55.1 WBNX, 55.2 WBNX-SD, 55.3 THIS TV (RF30.1-3)...I wanted to Cher This trilogy of pics showcasing WBNX!
- Cleveland, OH, 5.1 WEWS (RF15)...I've heard of Dr. Oz lashing out at his critics but this is ridiculous!
- Lorain, OH, 43.1 WUAB (RF28)...I'm always happy to catch "The Block" because I have fuzzy (analog) memories of catching WUAB in the late 80s! (Picture it...Scarborough circa 1988, with a "Golden-U" antenna from Radio Shack sitting on top of the TV!)
- Detroit, MI, 20.1 WMYD (RF21)...My own "shocking confession" is that Detroit stations didn't seem to come in very much during 2013!
Oct. 11, 2013:
- Cleveland, OH, 5.1 WEWS (RF15)...Hamilton, ON's CHCH was moving to the same frequency as WEWS (seen below with Mike Dunston and Elisa Malinovitz), so I aimed to soak up whatever reception I could before the switch!
Elisa Malinovitz was definitely on my radar that morning!
Jackie Zabielski really drove the show forward with her traffic reports!
I've been intoxicated by Josh Boose since his days at Buffalo's WGRZ, but I perked up even more when I found his Out Magazine profile from 2004!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24) with Peter Hall!
- Cleveland, OH, 61.1 WQHS (RF34)...The U.S. Government Shutdown was all over the noticias this month!
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...It felt like Evan Dawson should be saying, "I'm just gonna drop this logo right here!"
Malala Yousafzai is an incredible inspiration to the world!
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45) with Scott Hetsko, Kevin Doran and Maureen McGuire!
- Orillia, ON, 21.0 CFTO...It's a tad fuzzy, but it's Katie Simpson! She soon became famous for her legendary reaction shot at a Rob Ford press conference!
- Wingham, ON, 8.0 CKNX with Marek Sutherland!
Oct. 12, 2013:
- Rochester, NY, 10.3 WHEC-WX (RF10.3) with Kevin Williams!
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10)...Infomercials for the Clear TV antenna began popping up, complete with a broadcast engineer disguised like "deep throat" to divulge over-the-air secrets!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...Hay, girl, hay! FX Caprara got into the Halloween spirit with cowboys, leather chaps and live animals, oh my!
- Rochester, NY, 13.2 CW-WHAM (RF13.2)...Alexis Arnold talked about the courageous Gabrielle Giffords, while viewers were Fall-ing for Jeff Najder's foliage report!
Oct. 14, 2013:
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...I heart the adventures of Peg + Cat! They are cute, witty and have fun songs!
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...I'm So Excited Elizabeth Berkeley and Val Chmerkovskiy parodied her Saved By The Bell implosion on Dancing With The Stars!
- Batavia, NY, 51.2 qubo [WPXJ] (RF23.2)...Archie's Weird Mysteries featured a bizarre plot about bondage plants.
Oct. 19, 2013:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.2 Bounce [WNLO] (RF32.2)...Soul Train provided us with the lost video from Alf's European dance project.
Oct. 25 & Nov. 8, 2013:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...These 2 pics belong together, since I'm a bear who appreciates Rachel Maddow!
Nov. 12 & Dec. 4, 2013:
- Hamilton, ON, 11.1 CHCH (RF15)...In November, CHCH began testing their signal on RF15. By December, they moved there full time.
Dec. 11, 2013:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Jaclyn Asztalos talked to puppeteer Adam Kreutinger about the upcoming Wizard of Claus musical!

Dec. 25 - Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...News 4 covered Midnight Mass in Bethlehem!
CBS broadcast the I Love Lucy Christmas Special! I was geeking out watching it over-the-air via WIVB, one of the original stations that showed Lucy in the 1950s! It was also funny to see the modern tweaks like "presented in HD" and social media hashtags!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Meanwhile, NBC was airing Kelly Clarkson's Cautionary Christmas Music Tale!

Welcome to TV Garth!
Ever since I was a kid, I loved antennas and TV reception. It was always a thrill to hook up an antenna and see what stations I could get, and see if I could pick up anything from a far distance. With the transition to digital broadcasting happening, my love for OTA (over the air) reception came back and this blog will focus on what channels I'm able to receive via antenna from my home just outside of Toronto, Canada. Plus there may be occasional commentaries on shows that I see while adjusting my reception.
