Greetings TV Garth readers! Here’s a look back at all the over-the-air TV mayhem viewed at my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada from July 2016! Stay tuned for anchors, anecdotes and antenna reception, oh my!
July 1, 2016:
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...Katrina Smith, Jason Powles and Jill Reale got right 2 the point that morning!
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...I’m all 4 getting to Wake Up with Teresa Weakley, Jordan Williams and Brittni Smallwood!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Michael was Wooten and hollerin’ with Melissa Holmes on Daybreak! Meanwhile, Maria Genero went up on the rooftop to click click click through the latest weather maps!
July 4, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Kelly Dudzik and Dave McKinley introduced an explosive story about Independence Day traditions!
The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular opened with Sara Bareilles performing a heartfelt tribute to the many victims of tragedies in 2016.
The fabulous Tamron Hall hosted the Spectacular in a Divatastically patriotic dress! (The guy behind her totally mirrored my “yaaaasss girl” sentiments!)
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...I got a kick out of PBS’ extra festive special, A Capitol Fourth!
- Paris, ON, 6.1 CIII (RF17)...This episode of ET Canada was worth taping, since Sangita Patel cued up Summer playlist suggestions!
July 5, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...The Summer was sweltering, and Kaylee totally Wendt there with her weather report!
July 6, 2016:
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...This episode of The Agenda, with host Nam Kiwanuka, was not endorsed by Stevie Wonder!
- Toronto, ON, 9.1 CFTO (RF9)...Sean Leathong had been a reporter at Hamilton’s CHCH for many years before joining CTV Toronto in 2016!
Black Lives Matter – Toronto prompted a necessary dialogue about LGBT community issues via their protest during the 2016 Pride parade. Zuraidah Alman introduced a story about the fallout from Pride Toronto’s contradictory responses after the protest.
July 8, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...Black Lives Matter protests were also happening in downtown Rochester, with Jennifer Lee covering the scene live. (Unfortunately, fellow reporters Justin Carter and Carlet Cleare were unfairly swept up in the chaos the next day.)
Things were less intense at the studio with Kelsie Smith and Mark McLean!
- Toronto, ON, 5.1 CBLT (RF20)...Makda Ghebreslassie and Jay Scotland Salsa’d their way into my living room that night!
July 9, 2016:
- Toronto, ON, 57.1 CITY (RF44)...As far as I’m concerned, the handsome Adam Korson can spread his Seed wherever he wants to! (I meant marketing his show to different territories you filthy minded readers!)
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Following Toronto and Rochester, protests against racial injustice were held at Buffalo’s MLK Park!
- Erie, PA, 54.1 WQLN (RF50)...WQLN’s Road Trips offered up a picturesque view of the Erie Islands!
- Erie, PA, 35.1 WSEE (RF16)...I definitely had my eye on this glorious station ID, featuring the classic tagline “A CBS Affiliate” as seen on their former building!
July 10, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...Viewers cried out “WHAM bam thank you ROC fam!” to Glenn Johnson, Ginny Ryan, Don Alhart, Doug Emblidge and Mike Catalana!
July 11, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10)...Pat Taney and Rich Caniglia introduced Nikki Rudd’s report on Darien Lake’s Ride of Steel! (Which is not to be confused with any adult Superman parodies…)
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...It was a Good Day for Rochester with Alexis Arnold anchoring!
- Erie, PA, 54.3 WQLN-S2 (RF50.3)...WQLN and WJET rolled through with a wheely great event! Both Tom New and Traci Teudhope were on hand to promote the Tour de North Shore for cycling enthusiasts!
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10)...News10NBC had a glorious rendering of the flower city in their snazzy, revamped intro!
- Rochester, NY, 10.2 MeTV [WHEC] (RF10.2)...Seeing The Lucy Show on TV always makes Me happy!
July 12, 2016:
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24)...Jeremy Miller, Lisa Spitz and Molly Matott were central to CNY viewers that morning!
Back in 2011, I declared Niko Tamurian one of my Syracrushes! Later in this blog, I’m adding another sportscaster to the list! Stay tuned!
It doesn’t truly feel like Summer until I catch a Sun infomercial, featuring Todd Caputo and former WSYR reporter Kaylea Nixon!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...My first interview for this blog was with Don Shipman, and he continues to do awesome work at Newschannel 2!
It was time for a shot of downtown Utica! (Check out Kate Miller’s Utica adventures, including her own visit with the famous clock below!)
I teased this earlier, so without further ado, I declare WKTV’s Sports Director Spencer Davidson my new Uticrush!
- Utica, NY, 2.3 WKTV-CW (RF29.3)...Davidson immediately ran away from my declaration and onto the Boilermaker track to interview Jill Reale! (Side note, I love their WKTV apparel!)
July 13, 2016:
- Erie, PA, 35.1 WSEE (RF16)...David Wolter was new to me on WSEE!
Meanwhile, Emily Matson and Mark Soliday were Trend-ing on Erie News Now!
July 15, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...I ain’t afraid of no Ghostbusters mega interviews with past and present cast members!
July 16, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...I was an Eyewitness to Mike Randall, the fab Liz Lewin and Nick Filipowski delivering the News!
- Hamilton, ON, 36.1 CITS (RF36)...I always say Yes to Summer!
July 17, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 10.3 WHEC-WX (RF10.3)...At least I started off saying yes to Summer until Brianna DiPilato reminded me about the muggy air and storms!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...MSNBC’s Joy-Ann Reid is awesome!
July 20, 2016:
- Syracuse, NY, 68.1 WSYT (RF19)...It’s always a Blast to have Fox 68 Run though my area when TVO’s Toronto transmitter is off!

- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...I Burst with excitement whenever Matt Malloy is on my screen!
July 24, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...Jim Madalinsky introduced a story about the 2016 Vote, which did not go at all how I hoped it would.
I didn’t fully appreciate the fabulousness of Ashley Doerzbacher until I saw her guest appearances on Live @ 13WHAM!
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10)...News10NBC had another great intro with local scenery and the Douglass-Anthony Memorial Bridge!
Amanda x 2 = 10 times the fun, as both Ciavarri and McDonald anchored the evening’s newscast!
Nina Porciuncula reported from the WHEC newsroom!
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...I fell in love with Justin Carter when I saw him rappel 21 stories down a building on Live @ 13WHAM!
Jeff Najder and Jim Madalinsky were anchoring that evening!
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...News 8 needs to develop a segment for Adam called “A Chodak Moment”!
- Toronto, ON, 9.1 CFTO (RF9)...When I’m not chasing him around at Pride, I watch Colin D’Mello on CTV News Toronto alongside weather anchor Dana Levenson!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...NBC’s Meet The Press was broadcasting from the Democratic National Convention with Andrea Mitchell, Chuck Todd, Rachel Maddow and Michael Steele!
July 25, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...ABC News was also covering the Convention with George Stephanopoulos and David Muir!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...In these divisive times, we could all stand to be a little more Yuna-fied!
July 26, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Michelle Obama’s appearance at the DNC featured her iconic statement, “When they go low, we go high!”
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39) and 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...A 4midible thunderstorm of romance engulfed Andrew Baglini, Erica Brecher and 2 rival stations! (At least until 2018, when Brecher moved to WIVB!)
July 27, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10)...As of 2018, weather anchor Brianna DiPilato has left TV. However, she recently started a delightful new website detailing her career shift!
I didn’t realize it at the time, but this would be my last Summer seeing the sassy fabulousness of Rebecca Leclair on TV! (When I moved in 2017, WHEC became harder to receive and Leclair left the station.)
However, I’m happy I made the Decision in 2016 to enjoy my time with Rebecca Leclair, Nikki Rudd and Brianna DiPilato while I had it!
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...Hillary Clinton broke the glass ceiling, becoming the first female nominee of a major political party for president! (And to this day, I really wish she had won!)
- Buffalo, NY, 17.1 WNED (RF43)...President Obama spoke at the Democratic National Convention and was awesome!
Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff anchored the PBS coverage of the DNC!
July 28, 2016:
- Erie, PA, 24.1 WJET (RF24)...Traci Teudhope and David Belmondo soft served a fabulous scoop about Dairy Queen’s Miracle Treat Day! (I nearly melted when I saw that headline!)
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10)...Longtime anchor Janet Lomax was on hand for News10NBC’s Decision 2016 coverage!
Rebecca Leclair was calm and collected, but Nikki Rudd mirrored my panic about losing WHEC in the future!
- Erie, PA, 54.2 WQLN-S1 (RF50.2)...The Q Kids Summer Reading Race reminded me of the “Summer Safari” book club I attended at Scarborough public libraries back in the 80s!
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Katie Morse, Ed Drantch and Desiree Wiley held down the 7 ABC fort that morning! (Wiley left Buffalo for Boston not too long after this broadcast!)
July 29, 2016:
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...Tim Falconer appeared on The Agenda to promote his book Bad Singer! My jaw dropped when his vocal coach turned out to be Micah Barnes – who I knew from Thunderpuss’ #1 club hit “Head”!
July 30, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.2 LAFF [WKBW] (RF38.2)...Speaking of singers, Lisa Rieffel was briefly on Empty Nest before unleashing anthems like “I Wanna See Your D—k” with her group Killola! (Check out their music here! Contrary to rumour, Dreyfuss didn’t provide ruff vocals for any of their songs.)
July 31, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...3M released an amazing series of ads with M.C. Hammer encouraging people to stop “hammer time” and use Command Strips for their home projects!
