Greetings TV Garth readers! After a long delay, I'm finally looking back at all the over-the-air TV mayhem viewed at my home in Markham, Ontario, Canada from April-May 2016! Here are the anchors, anecdotes and antenna reception I saw!
April 1, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Tranzmission was interviewed when businesses thought about implementing gender neutral restrooms in light of discriminatory bathroom bills!
April 2, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.2 LAFF [WKBW] (RF38.2)...Ellen reruns on Laff gave me a new appreciation for her coming out and the way she championed gay characters and storylines! (Patrick Bristow and Jack Plotnick, seen below, portrayed a couple on the show!) Check out a wonderful A.V. Club recap of a post coming out episode!
April 7, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...I didn’t need to hack the jackpot, because handsome Josh Elliott suits me like a pot of gold!
April 10, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 49.4 Get TV [WNYO] (RF49.4)...I had a huge crush on Jonathan Silverman as a teen, so I loved seeing him in These Old Broads.
Broads also starred legendary divas Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, Shirley MacLaine and Joan Collins!
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...With increased xenophobia creeping in via conservative election campaigns, I was glad to see 7 ABC’s story about interfaith gatherings!
April 14, 2016:
- Toronto, ON, 9.1 CFTO (RF9)...The Daily Show with Trevor Noah featured the fabulous W. Kamau Bell (of CNN’s United Shades of America) as a guest!
- Hamilton, ON, 11.1 CHCH (RF15)...Jason Agnew and Jaclyn Colville hosted a brief resurrection of CHCH’s classic kids show Tiny Talent Time!
April 18, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...Supergirl featured a cast of wonder women including Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh and Calista Flockhart!
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Dancing With The Stars contestant Nyle DiMarco brought awareness to the Deaf community and made my hormones do a tango when I saw his modeling work!
April 20, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...I went nuts over this animated station bumper for Rochester’s PBS station!
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...Ginny Ryan and Don Alhart introduced a story about Underground Railroad hero Harriet Tubman becoming the new face of the U.S. $20 bill! (Unfortunately, as of 2018, progress has stalled on making this happen.)
Jennifer Johnson appeared in a lively promo for Good Day Rochester!
April 22, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...Anne-Marie Green reported on the sad news of Prince’s passing.
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Ears to Carol Burnett and Jimmy Fallon tugging at viewers’ nostalgia on The Tonight Show!
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...The Agenda interviewed Professor Glenn Loury about Race In 21st Century America.
April 23, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 49.1 WNYO (RF49)...Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey reminded me of when I went to a screening of Alex Winter’s documentary Downloaded back in 2013. At the time, I didn’t realize it was the same Alex Winter who played Bill!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Entertainment Tonight certainly wasn’t a drag, with 90s beach footage of Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa, plus a RuPaul interview!
April 25, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...John Stamos promoted the awesome (albeit short lived) Grandfathered on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Check out the hunky flamingo pic with Stamos and co-star Josh Peck below!
April 29, 2016:
- Toronto, ON, 57.1 CITY (RF44)...Breakfast Television gave us healthy servings of UTSC alum Natasha Ramsahai, Tammie Sutherland, Kevin Frankish and Winston Sih!
April 30, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.2 WGRZ2-2 (RF33.2)...Paul Lynde (below on Johnny Carson) was known for his campy persona and winks at homosexuality when it was still very taboo!
May 2, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...Lauren Hall motored through News 4’s traffic updates with a wheel-y fun joie de vivre!
May 5, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Cyndi Lauper just wanted to have fun on Late Night With Seth Meyers! I was lucky enough to see her Bop around on a Kinky Boots float in the 2015 Toronto Pride Parade!
May 7, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...These NBC commentators were clearly horsing around during the lead up to the Kentucky Derby!
Entertainment Tonight reporters got No Sleeep trying to cover the latest happenings of Janet Jackson, who rocked Toronto back in 2015!
May 9, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...I enjoyed watching ABC’s resurrected version of BattleBots with my family!
May 10, 2016:
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...These three gentlemen were well suited to promote Joe Tahan’s Furniture!
- Utica, NY, 2.2 WKTVCBS (RF29.2)...This was my first time catching WKTV (with Katrina Smith and Jason Powles below) after they added a CBS subchannel!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...It’s always Reale-y exciting to see Jill deliver the temps for the Central New York area!
- Utica, NY, 2.4 WKTV-ME (RF29.4)...Vicki Lawrence was advertising Mama’s Family on MeTV! Around 1988, Lawrence did a promo tour for the show and visited my local Miracle Food Mart at Markham & Sheppard! (I vaguely remember posters saying something like "Mama's Coming!") I went with my Mom and got her autograph as she walked through the aisles in a glamorous coat followed by TV cameras!
- Utica, NY, 2.2 WKTVCBS (RF29.2)...I captured a beautiful station ID for WKTV’s new CBS subchannel, which increasingly replaced Syracuse’s WTVH on Utica area cable systems.
May 11, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...It was gr8 to see Scott Hetsko, Adam Chodak and Maureen McGuire anchoring News 8 at 11!
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...Crazy Talk interviewed Vinny Guadagnino from Jersey Shore, who I thought was cute and sexy and reminded me of a stripper I was once obsessed with!
May 13, 2016:
- Toronto, ON, 5.1 CBLT (RF20)...Matt Galloway anchored CBC’s FM/TV hybrid Metro Morning!
May 14, 2016:
- Toronto, ON, 41.1 CIII (RF41)...Drake was the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live and I heart his love for Toronto!
May 15, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...NBC's Fall schedule was a little too...er...Crowded to give this enjoyable sitcom a second season!
May 16, 2016:
- Jamestown, NY, 26.3 WNYBSD2 (RF26.3)...The cast of Dr. Wonder's Workshop were really wigging out that day!
May 18, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...The Tonight Show debuted a clip of Zac Efron and Seth Rogen in Hands Across America Neighbors 2 and I approve of this massage message!
I’ve loved Margaret Cho since All-American Girl, so I enjoyed seeing her pop up on Late Night With Seth Meyers!
May 22, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Stevie Wonder and Madonna paid tribute to Prince on the Billboard Music Awards!
May 23, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...I was all 4 Dave Greber appearing on this edition of News 4 at 4!
Ali Ingersoll and Christy Kern mirrored my expression about the upcoming story on sex education! (Where were Salt N Pepa ft. Spinderella when you needed them?)
May 24, 2016:
- Rochester, NY, 31.1 WUHF (RF28)...WUHF promoted Antenna TV’s “exclusive over the air programming”!
May 26, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Viewers buckled up for Claudine Ewing’s report on seat belt safety!
May 29, 2016:
- Jamestown, NY, 26.2 WNYB-HD (RF26.2)...Whether she knew it or not, Dorinda Clark-Cole’s fierce ensemble was totally ready for the festivities that would take place in June!
- Erie, PA, 54.3 WQLN-S2 (RF50.3)...The fabulous Gwen Ifill hosted PBS’ Washington Week!
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...The Beach Boys brought Good Vibrations to viewers during the National Memorial Day Concert!
May 31, 2016:
- Buffalo, NY, 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...Rochester viewers may have wondered where Kaylee Wendt, and the answer was Buffalo!
- Toronto, ON, 9.1 CFTO (RF9)...Colin D’Mello reported from the Scarborough Civic Centre which is right near the CFTO studios! (He was very gracious when I chased him around during Pride 2011 and 2012!)
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...Pride Week was about to kick off in Buffalo, which meant Summer fun was just around the corner!
