Welcome to TV Garth!

Ever since I was a kid, I loved antennas and TV reception. It was always a thrill to hook up an antenna and see what stations I could get, and see if I could pick up anything from a far distance. With the transition to digital broadcasting happening, my love for OTA (over the air) reception came back and this blog will focus on what channels I'm able to receive via antenna from my home just outside of Toronto, Canada. Plus there may be occasional commentaries on shows that I see while adjusting my reception.

Reception Reports: July 2012 (Part 3)

Greetings TV Garth readers! The July roundup continues with Part 3 covering Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Utica, NY. There were also appearances from Cleveland, OH plus Erie and Johnstown, PA as well as Kitchener, ON! Stay tuned for some far off reception, amazing station IDs and dashes of tasteless innuendo!

July 14, 2012

Who wouldn't enjoy an ice cold can of News 8? Rochester, NY's WROC (RF45) offered up a refreshing campaign encouraging viewers to bring their pop tabs to the Red Wings game for charity!

2012-07-14

Buffalo, NY's WIVB (RF39) featured a report from Ed Drantch! The lively and handsome Drantch has great energy, and is enjoyable to watch on air! (More recently, Drantch has done an awesome job anchoring WIVB's Wake Up! in the morning!)

2012-07-14

I also enjoy the thunderous enthusiasm that WIVB's Mike Cejka brings to his forecasts! Check out Cejka's Facebook page for great weather related photos and information!

2012-07-14

I was radiant as a rainbow when I caught Pride coverage on Rochester, NY's WUHF (RF28.) Floats in the parade featured fabulous folks and historical shout outs!

2012-07-14
2012-07-14

As well, WUHF interviewed Kelly Clark from the Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley.

2012-07-14

On top of the Pride coverage, WUHF also talked about the Summer Fest concert featuring the Divatastic singer Elle Varner. (I swear Varner's look was inspired by Didi from the 1980s Barbie & The Rockers doll line!)

2012-07-14

Between Pride and Elle Varner, WUHF's Stacey Pensgen put her hand on her hip and declared her own fabulosity to Tina Shively during the newscast!

2012-07-14

July 15, 2012

What could be more entertaining than a ventriloquist with her two puppets?

2012-07-15

A ventriloquist with her two puppets getting weirdly close to tell each other secrets! (Seen via Rochester, NY's W42CO, RF42.)

2012-07-15

Someone who is definitely not a puppet is physicist and activist Vandana Shiva, as seen via Rochester, NY's WXXI (RF16.)

2012-07-15

Utica viewers Can't Hart-ly Wait for the 11pm newscast on WKTV (RF29) thanks to anchor Nicole Hart!

2012-07-15

Springville, NY's WBBZ (RF7) offered up this great promo for their original special Buffalo Night In America. Media critic Alan Pergament offered a hilariously savage take on the festivities. Snarky reviews aside, I really do appreciate WBBZ's efforts to become Buffalo's "hometown station."

2012-07-15

July 16, 2012

Kristen Copeland gave a rock solid endorsement for Miracle Home Makeover tickets on Utica, NY's WKTV (RF29.) Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Children's Miracle Network.

2012-07-16

I also caught some of WKTV's newscast with Adam Musyt, Bill Worden and Jason Powles on deck.

2012-07-16

Appropriately, former WKTV reporter Evan White popped up on Rochester, NY's WHAM (RF13) during a repeat of their newscast. Evan delivered a White hot story about the statewide burn ban taking place that Summer.

2012-07-16

I got the impression WHAM's Angela Hong was ready to throw the book at folks who opposed funding for the Canandaigua Library.

2012-07-16

Longtime WHAM anchors Ginny Ryan and Don Alhart allegedly noted that well read individuals supported the library's funding.

2012-07-16

And WHAM, bam, thank you man! The following story was bulging with details about Anthony Weiner's bid to make a political comeback. I always knew that one day Weiner would rise again!

2012-07-16

A cute and funny ad for Salvatore's pizza also aired on Rochester's WHAM. This guy brought the humour with his line, "We can't sing, but we can wrap!" AMAZING!

2012-07-16

Then we arrive at the "cute" part of the ad. I definitely wouldn't mind if this guy showed me some Italian sausage...as a topping for my pizza you dirty minded readers!

2012-07-16

NBC's push for the Olympics was in full swing, and I was able to snag a great shot of the local promo on Rochester, NY's WHEC (RF10.)

2012-07-16

WHAM's Jon Doss flew through his report about the Red Wings, but noted the Tides could turn at any moment.

2012-07-16

I still enjoy the occasional shot of Kathie Lee & Hoda's hour of Today, seen here via Syracuse, NY's WSTM (RF24.)

2012-07-16

The ladies dished about the two big assets Mariah Carey would bring to the table as an American Idol judge - her singing and songwriting! (Seen via Syracuse, NY's WSTM, RF24.)

2012-07-16

I really couldn't wine too much about the Finger Lakes tour being promoted on Erie, PA's WQLN (RF50) as part of their "Road Trips" series.

2012-07-16

More NBC athletic promotions came via the Olympic Zone bumper seen on Utica, NY's WKTV (RF29.)

2012-07-16

July 17, 2012

I always enjoy catching Don Shipman on Utica, NY's WKTV (RF29.) He rocked the morning newscasts and was recently promoted to evening anchor! Go Don!

2012-07-17

July 21, 2012

As a youngster I would have done a backflip over a concept like "NBC Kids," as seen below via Buffalo, NY's WGRZ (RF33.) I grew up loving NBC and their iconic logo!

2012-07-21

Rochester, NY's TCT outlet W42CO (RF42) had a wacky kids show with puppets and people running a diner. One time I stumbled across an episode where the human lady tells the puppet chef to be "obedient" just before a hamburger with eyes shows up. Who needs special brownies with entertainment like this?

2012-07-21

It's rare to catch local flavour on Kitchener, ON's CKCO (RF13) so I totally ate up this ad for Benny's Family Restaurant.

2012-07-21

I also saw some of CKCO's newscast with Jamie Killingsworth, Max Wark and Mark Paine. Max definitely Warks hard to inform viewers of important issues in the Kitchener-Waterloo region!

2012-07-21

Johnstown, PA's WJAC (RF34) made a brief appearance with a great promo featuring longtime anchor Marty Radovanic and meteorologist Tony Martin!

2012-07-21
2012-07-21

I have a Theory that WJAC's station ID made a Big Bang due to the nifty Olympic rings beside it!

2012-07-21

Cleveland, OH's WEWS (RF15) really got my motor going with this ad for Ron Marhofer Hyundai. I'm not into cars, but Chris Marhofer is certainly welcome to show me what the stick shift is all about!

2012-07-21

CanCon In The US alert - WEWS's subchannel LWN was running the fun and fabulous CBC talk show Steven & Chris!

2012-07-21

"Yep...that is, indeed, a well branded ID for WEWS in the corner," observed the man on screen.

2012-07-21

Akron, OH's WBNX (RF30) showed up with a nice ID on their subchannel.

2012-07-21

It's also worth noting that "This" programming Bounced away from WUAB and landed on WBNX's 55-3 subchannel!

2012-07-21

Cleveland, OH's WEWS (RF15) gave evidence that life's a jungle during Mr. Buehlers' day off! (Ferris was busy.)

2012-07-21

I wouldn't go as far as saying it was a miracle that Akron, OH's WDLI (RF49) overtook Buffalo, NY's WNYO, but it was still pretty exciting to see!

2012-07-21

It just felt right to see puppets spinning yarns on WDLI's "Smile of a Child" subchannel!

2012-07-21

Cleveland, OH's WUAB (RF28) ran a fun ad for the Haasz Auto Mall. The outrageous "Wizard of Haasz" told viewers not to let their credit scores haunt them like old yearbook photos!

2012-07-21

Erie, PA's WICU (RF12) featured a great promo with almost all of the station's anchors including Kevin MacDowell and Amanda Post! (Check out my road trip to Erie where I toured WICU and met members of their awesome team, including Post!)

2012-07-21

Check out this amazing "class photo" of WICU circa 2011-2012! Tons of awesome personalities and anchors were on hand!

2012-07-21

The promo closed with a WICU logo so big it threatened to eat my TV screen! In other words, I LOVED it!

2012-07-21

Most of the shows I've seen on Cleveland, OH's Univision affiliate WQHS (RF34) feature leggy ladies of some sort.

2012-07-21

But I can't complain, since the show I stumbled across also featured a handsome guy getting blindfolded!

2012-07-21

Cleveland, OH's WEWS (RF15) showed a great ad for Bill Doraty KIA with Bill as a lifeguard trying to "save you" from paying too much for your car! Love it!

2012-07-21

Here was visual proof that WEWS can really bring down the house! (Right before they go about rebuilding it, of course!) I would almost be tempted to become a volunteer to snag one of those shirts!

2012-07-21

The home renovations are part of WEWS' impressive Building Better Neighborhoods campaign!

2012-07-21

Stay tuned to TV Garth as we construct the final chapter of July's merry mayhem! Part 4 coming soon!
