Greetings TV Garth readers! This is probably going to be one of my last “full on” Rochester reports, since I’ve covered the city so thoroughly that even people who live there are like “OMG….not again!” Plus I’m far behind on Reception Reports that cover lesser seen new channels I’ve gotten, so to paraphrase the classic I Love Lucy chocolate factory scene, I need to “Speeeed it up a little!”
May 24, 2009
I was getting Rochester in the afternoon, which is less common than it is at night. The afternoon brought the usual mix of syndicated fare like Judge Judy on 31-1 WUHF and kids programming on 21-1 WXXI. The woman on WXXI looks like she’s saying “Ugh, and then they gave me this ugly wall frame with a weird blue shape in the middle!”
Then there was a break until the very early morning at about 5:43am (yep, I was still up) when I got to capture commercials during the morning news shows including the PSA you see on 8-1 WROC below.
Here we have Dunn Tire which is located in the town of Webster. I wonder if that’s near the Ma’am-George County.
I love me some divaliciousness on Half & Half, on 31-1 WUHF. It stars Essence Atkins, Rachel True, and in the second pic the wonderful Alec Mapa!
Here comes the weather on 8-1 WROC with Bob Metcalfe.
And here’s the news team over on 10-1 WHEC, along with a shot of WHEC’s Weather subchannel on 10-2.
WHEC was reporting on Susan Boyle, in which it looked like she was going to hypnotize the world with the lasers bursting out from behind her as she sang.
Also enthusiastic were the Rochester folks who took part in the Roc City Rib Fest, who were singing the praises of their ribs!
Telma Hopkins is positively shocked at how much those people are enjoying their ribs.
And here we have the sweet, innocent WROC reporter Meghan Backus who has no idea what she’s in for when Bob Metcalfe joins her in the next pic!
Imagine the following (fictional) dialogue going with the pics below.
Bob: Uh, hey there Meghan, did you know the weather is going to be a hot 69 today?
Meghan: [sighs] Bob, you’re disgusting.
Bob: Come on folks, she knows I’m just kidding!
Meghan: [laughs] Of course I do! Stay classy, Bob!
More weather, but with a great montage of Rochester!
And the following man is a suspect and wanted for…oh wait, I see balloons….oops…he’s not guilty of anything but growing a year older! Happy Birthday Jon! (Seen over on 13-1 WHAM.)
Then it’s Scrubs star Sarah Chalke in time to do a PSA over on 10-2 WHEC-DT!
This bouncy green ball thing-y is having entirely too much fun over on 21-1 WXXI.
Love that rainbow! It’s a great slide showing off WXXI Kids.

WXXI had technical difficulties, but it was a great chance to capture the program info plus their logos!
Then over on 31-1 WUHF, I got to see some of their 10pm newscast, which ended with a great shot of the famous Ford Street Bridge!
Then came a commercial for the ESL Air And Water Show featuring the Canadian Snowbirds!
You’ve got Friends you can count on at WUHF!
Meanwhile, 10-1 WHEC was airing Poker After Dark.
It was Memorial Day Weekend, so 10-2 WHEC-DT had a great shot of the American flag flying proudly over Rochester!
I wondered if the following commercial was somehow planted into Rochester’s stations to target my notorious dislike of vegetables.
And here’s a great shot of the NBC Sports Championship promo on WHEC!
Meanwhile, 13-2 CW-WHAM was serving up local car commercials.
Below we have Jeff Foxworthy on The Morning Show With Mike & Juliet on 8-1 WROC. There’s a certain irony in having a “morning show” airing at 2am.
Over on 13-1 WHAM, we have Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen. Byron’s in the first pic, and a woman with gigantic Diva hair is in the second pic! Part of me thinks: “I want that hair!”
A truly meta moment as I witness channel surfing on King Of The Hill while I’m channel surfing! (Seen on 31-1 WUHF.)
I initially thought this would be an entirely different show when I read the title below and saw the guy standing there.
Then I called up the program info and saw that, unfortunately, it wasn’t as radical a subject as I thought.
The News 10 NBC logo threatens to take over my TV screen as they go to a weather update on 10-2 WHEC-DT!
If you look closely at the weather map below, you’ll see many Canadian cities including Toronto!
I finally figured out the formula to a Steve Wilkos show. Take one “innocent” person and have them set up the scandalous story, bring on the “deceptive” person who will be scrawny and sketchy looking. Then watch hilarity ensue as Steve jumps up to have an “angry confrontation” with the scrawny and sketchy guest who needs to “get their act together.” I see this happen quite frequently no matter what the episode’s about.
I would, however, like to see Steve have a confrontation with that audience member in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Here’s a unique local ad for CarSoup.com on 13-1 WHAM!
Then we have a totally groovy commercial for Pepsi-Cola Throwback with awesome retro graphics, and a neat translucent WHAM bug in the corner of the screen.
The Green Student Of The Month looks scared to be receiving the honor over on WROC. (Maybe she doesn’t recycle as much as they think she does.)
One On One was airing on WUHF and involved a woman with a giant afro looking Disco-fied. Maybe she was drinking Pepsi-Cola Throwback.
Here we have a series of shots from the new Seek It Local ad campaign on 13-1 WHAM followed by an ad for Child Safety.
Then it was time for Merv Griffin’s Crosswords!
I hate to indulge the stereotypes involving “Diva sass,” but every time I see Judge Lynn Toler on Divorce Court, I keep waiting for an “MMMMmmm hmmm” before she dresses down a trashy couple.
Unfortunately, Jay Leno on 10-1 WHEC isn’t so sure about the Diva sass.
So hanging our heads in shame after indulging the “Mmmm hmmmm,” let’s go join the Marines over on WXXI!
Then came a special about the DTV transition called Get Ready For Digital TV on WXXI. It’s essentially an infomercial about DTV featuring the stars of This Old House and Now’s Maria Hinojosa.
I found it sort of hilarious that during a special about getting the most out of your DTV reception that my picture began pixellating really badly.
And there you have it! A Big Burst Of Rochester as we begin to close out May 2009’s Reception Reports! Stay tuned to TV Garth for more reports very soon!
