Greetings TV Garth readers! It may be February 2012, but I'm determined to complete my 2011 roundup! There are a few more parts to go, but it'll be worth it! So sit back, grab a snack and take a look back at the signals that visited Markham, Ontario, Canada throughout 2011! This edition starts in June, but mainly showcases reception from late September through the beginning of October.
JUNE 3, 2011
This is the exact look I want to have on my face when someone tells me a ridiculous story! So Diva and "done with it" at the same time! (Seen via Rochester, NY's WXXI, RF16.)
SEPTEMBER 25, 2011
I wasn't able to catch any of the new hi-def newscasts from Utica, NY's WUTR (RF30) over-the-air. However, I did catch this neat promo via WUTR's subchannel WPNY-LP!
In the afternoon, a neat weather special stormed in via Rochester, NY's WHAM (RF13) featuring meteorologists Marty Snyder, Jeff Najder, Glenn Johnson and Mark McLean!
Syracuse, NY's WSTM (RF24) was a treat with Brian Mueller in a pumpkin patch on their CNY subchannel!
SEPTEMBER 27, 2011
Near the end of September, Gloria Estefan was able to Reach viewers with a fabulous interview on Tavis Smiley. (Seen via Rochester, NY's WXXI, RF16.)
OCTOBER 4, 2011 - Hot-tober Begins!
The weather in early October was hot like the desert behind Kelis! The reception was so good from October 4-11 that I affectionately dubbed it "Hot-tober." (Seen via the Cool TV subchannel on Rochester, NY's WUHF, RF28-2.)
I've never had a Wilder time Pryor to seeing this classic movie on the new Bounce TV suchannel on Rochester, NY's WROC (RF45-2).
Cleveland, OH's WEWS (RF15) waltzed into my living room with the hunky Mark Ballas of Dancing With The Stars on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
My reception of Erie, PA's WQLN-S1 (RF50-2) was sizzling as Hot-tober got cooking!
I didn't have much to wine about as Clearfield, PA's WPSU-SD1 (RF15-2) arrived with Zachary Quinto on Vine Talk. It was grape to see him!
I also got to see a neat promo for Johnstown, PA's WJAC (RF34) with Marty Radovanic via their MeTV subchannel.
I love the way that Ken Burns through his competition as a famous documentary maker. The hot director showed up on Clearfield, PA's WPSU (RF15) to endorse supporting your local PBS stations.
I caught a promo for WPSU's upcoming special Our Town: Punxsutawney. I didn't realize that Punxsutawney is one of the famous Groundhog Day sites where predictions are made about whether or not Spring will arrive early.
Reception of Johnstown, PA's WJAC (RF34) lasted long enough for me to snag a great shot of the MeTV station ID on their subchannel!
I was surprised to see Greensburg, PA's WPCB (RF50) knock out Erie's WQLN for a short time!
This ad for Red Lobster's "endless shrimp" actually inspired my friends and I to have a meal at the restaurant shortly after this! (Seen via Utica, NY's WKTV, RF29.)
Utica, NY's WKTV (RF29) showed up at least once a day for the entire Hot-tober week. Bill Worden appears below in a repeat of their evening news.
WKTV's newscast also featured the relatively new hire Lexie O'Connor.
OCTOBER 5, 2011
Reception sure wasn't the Pitts in October! Pittsburgh, PA's WPXI (RF48) arrived briefly during their morning newscast with Brittny McGraw reporting below.
WPXI's Mike LaPoint delivered the weather that morning. He totally needs an interactive fan page called "Get To LaPoint". (You know...because you could contact him?)
WPXI's morning show was anchored by Jennifer Abney. Pittsburgh is a rarer city for me to catch, so I was very excited to see their news!
Todd McDermott was also on anchor duties that morning on WPXI.
Utica, NY's WKTV (RF29) featured meteorologist Bill Kardas looking almost mischievious about the day's forecast.
WKTV's AM show was anchored by the Divalicious Megan Koskovich. It was recently announced that Koskovich is leaving to become a producer at a Baltimore station.
I wondered why WKTV's Don Shipman was off that week, but later found out he was on vacation preparing to marry his partner! Check out my previous 2011 Highlights blog for more about the awesome occasion!
Johnstown, PA's WJAC (RF34) breezed through with a great station ID during a weather promo!
The weather forecast was more beautiful than the on screen spelling in Jim Burton's report on WJAC.
Here's a nice shot of WJAC's news set featuring anchors Bill Brown, Lindsay Ward and Jim Burton.
I can't resist slipping in another great WJAC logo, especially since they took out the call letters when they revamped it a month later.
Kitchener, ON's CKCO (RF13) featured evening news with Meghan Furman. While CKCO is only 76 miles away from me, I still consider it tropo as it doesn't come in regularly for me.
OCTOBER 6, 2011
I caught Rochester, NY's WHAM (RF13) showing a repeat of their evening news with Angela Hong reporting.
WHAM's Adam Chodak introduced a story about the sad passing of Apple pioneer Steve Jobs.
I don't think I've mentioned it before, but WHAM's Evan White used to be a reporter at Utica, NY's WKTV a few years ago.
WHAM's Ginny Ryan delivered a story about Gabrielle Giffords. I have to say Giffords is one of the most inspiring people I've ever seen. Her determination to recover from the tragic shooting in Arizona is amazing to watch.
Utica, NY's WUTR (RF30) arrived with World News Now later that night with Rob Nelson and Tanya Rivero.
WUTR's subchannel WPNY-LP (RF30-2) briefly flashed the schedule for sister station WFXV (Utica's FOX affiliate.) WPNY-LP usually shares the same infomercial feed from WFXV, hence the WFXV promos.
At the top of the hour I got a great ID for WPNY-LP (RF30-2.)
Utica, NY's WKTV (RF29) was a boys club that night with Adam Musyt, Bill Worden and Jason Powles anchoring a repeat of the evening news. However, that would soon change by the next morning...
OCTOBER 7, 2011
October 7th started out as a "Day of Divas" with Utica's WKTV (RF29) being anchored by Jill Reale and Megan Koskovich. It was Reale-y exciting to see!
Rochester, NY's WHAM (RF13) also had their share of Daytime Divas with Alexis Arnold and Norma Holland being fabulous!
WHAM's Marty Snyder looks like he knew he was outnumbered by the Divas! I also heart that the map shows a sassy Canadian city named Flamborough. That's my kinda town!
My day got Better when I saw the hotness of Steve Ward on Utica, NY's WKTV-DT2 (RF29-2). Even he looks surprised by the invasion of Divas on the AM news!
Rochester, NY's WHEC (RF10) also made it in that morning! Nikki Rudd's jaw wasn't actually dislocated, but the picture/reception suffered from relatively new co-channel interference from Barrie, ON's CKVR.
WHEC's weather subchannel (RF10-3) was promoting their new MeTV offerings which included one of my favourites - I Love Lucy!
Utica, NY's WPNY-LP (RF30-2) appeared with more Girl Power during a Sun car dealership infomercial!
Things began to even out when Syracuse, NY's WSYR (RF17) arrived with Dan Cummings and Tanja Babich on The Morning News.
Erie, PA's WICU (RF12) came in with Kara Coleman and Mark Soliday waking up viewers in the AM. (Or in my case, viewers who hadn't even gone to sleep yet!)
Meanwhile, Erie, PA's WSEE (RF12-3) brought back the Diva power with Eva Mastromatteo and Julie Coates on deck.
Erie, PA's WICU (RF12) provides visual proof of the Hot-tober weather!
The subchannel of Rochester, NY's WROC (RF45) had some Gospel Divas adding Bounce to the morning's offerings!
Even Watertown, NY's WWTI (RF21) scraped in briefly. Here's a shot of their CW subchannel. Not perfect, but I did enjoy that it was a station ID!
Syracuse, NY's WSYR-2 (RF17-2) began repeating their morning newscast with weather man Chris Brandolino pictured below.
I was getting a strong blink of signal on RF27, so I left my digital box on that channel when I went to bed. When I woke up, I found that I'd finally bagged the elusive WFXV from Utica, NY at my home in Markham. (I'd picked this up before when DXing in Downtown Toronto, but never before from Markham!) WFXV is hard to pick up in Markham due to strong analog interference from a Global transmitter in Peterborough, ON.
That wraps up Part 5 of this series of 2011 Highlights! Stay tuned to TV Garth for more television treats!
Welcome to TV Garth!
Ever since I was a kid, I loved antennas and TV reception. It was always a thrill to hook up an antenna and see what stations I could get, and see if I could pick up anything from a far distance. With the transition to digital broadcasting happening, my love for OTA (over the air) reception came back and this blog will focus on what channels I'm able to receive via antenna from my home just outside of Toronto, Canada. Plus there may be occasional commentaries on shows that I see while adjusting my reception.
