Greetings TV Garth readers! After a long delay, I'm finally looking back at all the over-the-air TV mayhem viewed at my home in Markham, Ontario from September 2015! Here are the anchors, anecdotes and antenna reception I saw!
Sept. 1, 2015:
- Detroit, MI, 4.1 WDIV (RF45)...Brandon Roux was on my radar!
- Detroit, MI, 4.3 Me TV [WDIV] (RF45.3)...Local 4 advertised Ellen!
WDIV also promoted Film Challenge Detroit!
- Flint, MI, 28.1 WCMZ (RF28)..Members of WCMU are take charge individuals!
WCMU (via Flint’s WCMZ) promoted American Masters with tennis great Althea Gibson!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3) with Emily Welsh and Chris Carroll!
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...Neil deGrasse Tyson had his interviews down to a science!
Sept. 2, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45) with Matt Jones and Mark Gruba!
Sept. 3, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...The elephant in the room was PBS Kids’ quirky new animation!
Concierto on WXXI-FM was música to my ears!
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10) with Lynette Adams!
Sept. 4, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 10.1 WHEC (RF10)...Rich Caniglia, Rebecca Leclair and Nikki Rudd anchored the morning news!
Rachel Spotts a good story when she sees one!
The fabulous Rebecca Leclair penciled in a back to school segment with Pat Taney!
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...The days and knights of Peg + Cat cast a spell over viewers!
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...”Hold up, what do you mean this show is cancelled?” Wanda Sykes didn’t say as a guest on Queen Latifah! (I really did wish the show had a longer run!)
Sept. 5, 2015:
- Detroit, MI, 4.2 This TV [WDIV] (RF45.2)...Local 4 sent Ruth Spencer to the Rescue, though she retired later that year!
Sept. 6, 2015:
- Oshawa, ON, 22.0 CHEX-TV2...CHEX Peterborough was celebrating their 60th Anniversary with a special hosted by Graham Hart!
There was some wonderful vintage advertising and news footage!
I love to pig out on local ads like this one for the Oshawa Rotary Ribfest!
- Rochester, NY, 21.2 WXXI-W (RF16.2)...American Masters hosted a double grand slam with tennis legends Althea Gibson and Billie Jean King!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.3 CNY [WSTM] (RF24.3)...CNY advertised WTVH’s airing of Family Feud!
Samantha German anchored on a rebroadcast of WSTM’s news!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Entertainment Tonight interviewed Madonna about her fabulous, underrated album Rebel Heart!
Sept. 8, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Scott Levin and Maryalice Demler’s story had many threads and more info could be found on the web!
- Rochester, NY, 21.1 WXXI (RF16)...Evan Dawson left WHAM and joined the WXXI roster on both television and radio!
Sept. 10, 2015:
- London, ON, 10.1 CFPL (RF10) with Kelda Yuen!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12) with Amanda Post!
- London, ON, 10.1 CFPL (RF10)...BX93’s Dave and Rachel presented the Concert Calendar for the London area!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3)...Gary Drapcho appeared in a local promo for the “Big Game” on CBS, complete with a WSEE “35” jersey!
- Elmira, NY, 18.1 WETM (RF18)...New Channel Alert…This was my first and (so far) only time catching Elmira’s NBC affiliate!
WETM’s subchannel aired a local game with the Clarion Golden Eagles!
Sept. 11, 2015:
- Pittsburgh, PA, 11.1 WPXI (RF48) with Scott Harbaugh!
- Hamilton, ON, 35.1 CHCJ (RF35) with Jayne Pritchard!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3)...I had seen the phrase ”Don’t give up the ship” on buildings around Erie, but didn’t know the full story until this historical marker was erected!
- Pittsburgh, PA, 11.1 WPXI (RF48) with Trisha Pittman on traffic!
Brittny McGraw and Katherine Amenta anchored that morning!
- Pittsburgh, PA, 4.1 WTAE (RF51)...Steve MacLaughlin thundered through his report that day!
Janelle Hall cut through the fog of the early morning slog!
Meanwhile, I was saying “hey!” to Kelly Frey!
- Pittsburgh, PA, 4.1 WTAE (RF51)...Nobunny knows more about movies than This popular subchannel on WTAE!
- Alliance, OH, 45.1 WNEO (RF45)...Western Reserve PBS dropped by!
- Johnstown, PA, 6.1 WJAC (RF34)...Lindsay Ward did a live report from the Flight 93 Field of Honor.
Tim Rigby and Josh Fosbrink anchored that morning!
Thumbs up to Jen Johnson for promoting WJAC’s social media!
Sept. 12, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...Shawn Stepner and Nick Filipowski were men in blue that day, which is not a reference to Blue Blake’s NSFW opus!
Sept. 13, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...Program information was not on 2’s side as the description listed ABC’s Prime Time Preview instead of NBC’s!
Sept. 14, 2015:
Tracie Potts is fabulous, but the 2016 presidential campaign certainly wasn’t!

- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...No matter where the CHiPs may fall, MeTV is always ready to scoop them up!
Sept. 16, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 21.2 WXXI-W (RF16.2)...Pioneers of Television covered I Love Lucy and threw in exquisite glamour shots of Lucille Ball!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...Jill Reale-y knows her weather!
I loved the retro font of the Capitol Theatre in Rome, NY!
- Oshawa, ON, 22.0 CHEX-TV2...After CBC stopped renewing affiliations with independent stations, CHEX entered a program supply arrangement with CTV!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29) with Ashley Csaszar!
Broadway Utica took a shot at promoting their latest musical!
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...Mazzola Insurance leapfrogged over many ads to win my heart with their (talking!) animated amphibian and l’il diva in training!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...The CW briefly aired Significant Mother, which I liked for the abs and appearances from my teenage crush Jonathan Silverman!
Don Shipman was on hand for the evening’s newscast!
Rachel Murphy introduced a story about local author Sandra Reilly!
Utica’s Stanley Theatre has nothing to do with Norman Fell, but does have some fabulous retro charm!
When I was young I was just as enthralled by Wonder Woman as the kid in this MeTV ad, promoting the network’s superhero lineup!

- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...The artist formerly known as “Rochester Home Page” was promoting Pigskin Pick ‘Em!
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13) with Norma Holland!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24)...Syra-crush sizzle (and a jazz hand?) from Niko Tamurian!
Lisa Spitz and Jeremy Miller anchored that morning!
WSTM viewers always Fall for Peter Hall!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...NewsChannel 2 brought us Katrina Smith, Jason Powles and Jill Reale!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3)...Ariana Grande did an amazing set of musical impressions on the Tonight Show!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...I was rooting for Hillary Clinton all throughout the 2016 campaign!
Sept. 18, 2015:
- Rochester, NY, 8.1 WROC (RF45)...Like Mariah Carey, Webster and Canandaigua had a Vision of love!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...This ad for Fly Creek Cider Mill reminded me of The Big Apple in Colbourne, Ontario!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3)...I was happy to SEE Eva Mastromatteo and Katie McGraw that day!
Maura Sirianni was reporting on the new season at Jr’s Last Laugh!
I’ve loved The Sassy Peacock ever since spotting it during my trips to Drenched Fur in Erie, PA!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...It wasn’t Skittles, but Doritos wanted consumers to taste the rainbow too! This limited edition included the fabulous slogan, “There’s nothing bolder than being yourself”!
Kevin Lee dropped by WICU to chat with Mark Soliday about his upcoming gig at Jr’s Last Laugh!
Greenhill Farms was founded in the late 1960s and mows through their competition to this day!
Sept. 21, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 7.1 WKBW (RF38)...People rallied for the historic Stonewall Inn to be recognized as a National Monument and soon it was!
Sept. 23, 2015:
- Erie, PA, 24.1 WJET (RF24)...Some fabulous station IDs appeared in an ad sponsored by Interstate Mitsubishi!
Phillip Mena and Reena Ninan would later JET from ABC’s World News Now to NBC and CBS, respectively!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...Rachel Murphy looked like she was on the set of a spooky movie! I was waiting for Whoopi Goldberg to pop out and say, “You in danger girl!”
- Buffalo, NY, 23.1 WNLO (RF32)...CTV’s talk show The Social was briefly syndicated to some US markets, including Buffalo’s WNLO!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3)...Customers defied TLC and sang, “Yes, Yes I want those scrubs!” when an adorable nurse emoji walked them through selections at Erie Uniforms and Scrubs!
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...The bridge closed when it saw Don Alhart’s tie and knew it couldn’t compete!
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...One of my Upstate New York friends got her vehicle from Carbone, so I get excited when I see their ads!
WKTV’s Spencer Davidson reported on the Utica Pioneers!
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...Steve Paikin talked to Assembly of First Nations National Chief, Perry Bellegarde on The Agenda!
- Erie, PA, 12.3 WSEE (RF12.3)...Elizabeth Warren is a fierce voice for progressive politics in the US senate!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)…I’ve enjoyed openly gay actor Andrew Rannells since he starred on The New Normal!
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...I saw the sobering documentary Up In Arms: How The Gun Lobby Is Changing Canada on TV Ontario.
- Erie, PA, 54.1 WQLN (RF50)...It would be amazing if Adele was a surprise guest at Live From Studio Q and sang “Cello from the other side!” to musician Zuill Bailey!
There was a nice variation on WQLN’s new station ID!
Great Scott, it was Nick Jr. advocating for Pre-K for PA!
- Erie, PA, 12.1 WICU (RF12)...Viewers were Fall-ing for Geoff Cornish’s Autumn Highlights!
Gary Drapcho swung for the fences with his sports report!
WICU also had a PSA for the PVA!
Sept. 24, 2015:
- Toronto, ON, 19.1 TVO (RF19)...The Agenda spoke to Sylvia Maracle and others about Aboriginal voter turnout.
- Utica, NY, 2.1 WKTV (RF29)...NewsChannel 2’s Morning Mug Club strutted forth to Take Steps For Crohn’s & Colitis!
- Rochester, NY, 13.1 WHAM (RF13)...Greg Connors and Mike Catalana promoted the Connors & Ferris high school sports report!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.3 CNY [WSTM] (RF24.3)...I heart Laura Hand!
Sept. 25, 2015:
- Syracuse, NY, 3.2 WSTQ (RF24.2)...Sun drove their sales pitch forward with Kaylea Nixon, formerly of WSYR!
- Syracuse, NY, 3.1 WSTM (RF24)...FX Caprara is the other wheely big auto dealer in the Central New York area!
Sept. 26, 2015:
- Wingham, ON, 8.0 CKNX...Brent Lale covered the London Knights!
- Buffalo, NY, 2.2 WGRZ2.2 (RF33.2)...It was a Small Wonder that Vicki predicted Dancing With The Stars nearly two decades before it aired!
I loved Small Wonder as a kid, so it was fun to catch it on Antenna TV!
Sept. 28, 2015:
- Buffalo, NY, 2.1 WGRZ (RF33)...I knew KSBY from visits to my grandparents’ house in Santa Maria, California over the years!
- Buffalo, NY, 4.1 WIVB (RF39)...Stop me if you’ve heard this one, but a-Corden to sources, Carol Burnett, Marcia Gay Harden and Fred Savage all sat down on a couch…
