Welcome to TV Garth!

Ever since I was a kid, I loved antennas and TV reception. It was always a thrill to hook up an antenna and see what stations I could get, and see if I could pick up anything from a far distance. With the transition to digital broadcasting happening, my love for OTA (over the air) reception came back and this blog will focus on what channels I'm able to receive via antenna from my home just outside of Toronto, Canada. Plus there may be occasional commentaries on shows that I see while adjusting my reception.

Year In Review – Part Three (September-October 2010)

Greetings TV Garth readers! Slowly but surely my attempt to summarize the year in reception for 2010 is almost complete. Even though I declared it a three part series, it swelled to four parts! This entry is HUGE, so grab that bag of chips leftover from the Super Bowl (or poach something from your upcoming Oscar party) and enjoy the TV events of September through October 2010!

SEPTEMBER

Over the past two years I’ve noticed that September’s reception is a wild grab bag of familiar and unusual tropo stations. 2009 brought an Ohio-fest. 2010, however, was a party in Pennsylvania with two channels I’d never seen before – WTAE from Pittsburgh and WJAC from Johnstown. (WJAC was weirdly resilient for a “new” channel, popping up three times in September and again in November!) Read on for the highlights for the month!

September 1st continued the wave of heavy tropo from late August, with Upstate New York and Erie, PA appearing. Check out the highlights below:

  • Utica, NY’s WKTV (RF29) rolled in with their morning show featuring Bill Kardas, Don Shipman and Megan Koskovich.

2010-09-01 025

  • I had a few Reservations about that jaw dropping poster behind Coreen Thompson, as seen on Rochester, NY’s WHEC (RF10.)

2010-09-01 048

  • It may have been the end of U.S. Combat, but the war for fashion dominance was only beginning when Rebecca Leclair busted out a hot pink top on WHEC!

2010-09-01 056

  • I definitely woke up when I saw this guy in an ad for Coffey…Sean Coffey, that is! He’d be my Taster’s Choice for sure!

2010-09-01 187

  • Erie, PA popped up with WICU (RF12) and Kara Coleman on weather.

2010-09-01 240 2010-09-01 241

  • Light The Lakes is an event that takes place in Chautauqua every September. The sponsors include Buffalo’s WGRZ, Erie’s WICU and the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce. I remember writing to their Chamber of Commerce in the mid-1990s to get information about Lucyfest – a Lucille Ball tribute weekend held in Jamestown, NY! (Seen via Erie, PA’s WBEP, RF12-2.)

2010-09-01 283

  • Brian Neudorff was on hand to give us the weather on Rochester, NY’s WROC (RF45) followed by Katrina Irwin and Jason Fraser, who towed the line with their report about illegally parked vehicles.

2010-09-01 3392010-09-01 359

  • Erie, PA’s WICU (RF12) was promoting their “How Cool Is Your School?” contest which involved a visit from 12 News Today to a local school for the lucky winner.

2010-09-01 314

  • Over on Erie’s WSEE (RF12-3) Mornings Live appeared with the awesome Ray Petelin! Follow him on Twitter or check out his website!

2010-09-01 446

  • Ray is one of the few morning hosts who can get real laughs out of his co-anchors. Watch Ray give Emily Matson the giggles in the pic below!

2010-09-01 508

  • WSEE also featured a story on the Erie County Fair (in Wattsburg) that morning. I’d love for the organizers to do a promo that said something like “Visiting the fair is elementary, my dear Wattsburg!”

2010-09-01 502

September 2nd continued the tropo wave with some more Erie, PA reception. Highlights featured below:

  • Sports anchor Jay Puskar was featured in a nice promo on Erie, PA’s WICU (RF12.) I believe his last name is pronounced “push car,” so if your engine ever stalls, you know who to call!

2010-09-02 076

  • Erie, PA’s WQLN (RF50) was running Celtic Thunder: It’s Entertainment which I though was a bit cornball and over the top. So it felt appropriate to hear “….with all that cheese in there,” when I flipped to WQLN’s Create subchannel.

2010-09-02 198

  • A pledge drive was running throughout WQLN that night, which gave a glimpse of their local flavour! I was half tempted to pledge the $40 to get the Lake Erie Lifestyle magazine (which has WQLN listings) seen in the second pic.

2010-09-02 2282010-09-02 241

  • Utica, NY’s WKTV (RF29) also appeared with Bill Worden, Caroline Gable, and meteorologist Adam Musyt!

2010-09-02 5992010-09-02 642

September 3rd featured some nice reception from both Utica and Rochester, NY. Check out the highlights:

  • I always enjoy when Jill Reale pops up during WKTV’s newscasts, but even more so when she’s Diva’d up and looking ready to hit the club! Imagine her stepping out in the outfit below and performing a hot dance single titled “Thunderous Love (A Storm In My Heart)”. Or she could remake Britney Spears’ “Radar” as “(On My Triple Doppler) Radar.”

2010-09-03 103

  • WKTV’s Jason Powles was on hand, and knows the score…er..scores and reports them during the AM Sports report.

2010-09-03 138

  • I’d probably have a seizure if I found that many guns at someone’s residence. On a sidenote, I’d love for the guy who was charged to be renamed Freddie D. Gunnman for the eventual TV movie. It would make a big bang in the ratings, for sure.

2010-09-03 175

  • Over on Rochester, NY’s WXXI (RF16) GED Connection profiled a physics teacher who performs songs about the mechanics of sound waves. She should totally use her…uh…unique performance style and sing a cover of “Let’s Get Physical” to her students. But that might attract the attention of Dateline NBC.

2010-09-03 199

  • Brian Neudorff stormed in via Rochester, NY’s WROC (RF45) to give us the latest weather scoop!

2010-09-03 342

  • Speaking of Morning Mug Club, it looks like someone at WKTV was attempting to mug some of the Fly Creek Cider Mill merchandise! The Ball Crunch sounds more threatening than tasty, so the thief wisely goes for the jelly!

2010-09-03 495

  • At the end of the newscast, it looked like Megan Koskovich was still annoyed that someone tried to get their hands on her jelly.

2010-09-03 572

  • Rochester’s WXXI (RF16) promoted their coverage of the New York State Attorney General Democratic Primary Debate. Say that three times fast.

2010-09-03 629

September 5th gave me what may be the last Diva glare from Telma Hopkins for awhile. (Seen on Rochester, NY’s WUHF, RF28.) Half & Half appears to have left syndication for the 2010-2011 season.

2010-09-05 089

September 6th brought a few standout moments:

  • They were making Whoopi over at the Electric Company, as seen on Rochester, NY’s WXXI (RF16.)

2010-09-06 025

  • Rochester, NY’s WUHF (RF28) showed a promo for their Sunday Real Estate show which used the rarely seen FOX 31 logo!

2010-09-06 105

  • The late newscast on Rochester, NY’s WROC (RF45) featured a story about the Rochester Labor Day parade including some engineers from both WROC and WHEC marching!

2010-09-06 282

September 7th brought a great promo from WROC (RF45) that had the legendary Bob Schieffer Meet The (Rochester) Press when he sat down with Kevin Doran and Maureen McGuire.

2010-09-07 098

September 10th had me salivating with excitement over WHAM’s eventual switch to HD news! The Rochester station would one of the first in the Upstate New York area to convert to hi-def news, complete with a new logo.

2010-09-10 295

I always love the Road Trips promos shown on Erie, PA’s WQLN (RF50.) On September 10th they delivered a postcard from Pennsylvania!

2010-09-10 435

September 11th brought many highlights, as pictured below:

  • Erie, PA’s WSEE (RF12-3) featured a promo for their annual Community For Kanzius fundraiser.

2010-09-11 038

  • There was also a WSEE Team of the Week promo featuring sports anchor Gary Drapcho.

2010-09-11 042

  • It felt appropriate that Scott Bremner’s guest on The Insider was Sarah Burrows from Gaudenzia Erie. The organization deals with addictions, and I fully admit that I’m addicted to long distance reception.

2010-09-11 076

  • There was a wonderful promo on WSEE for Lisa Adams and Weekends Now. (The newscast is run simultaneously on WICU and WSEE on the weekends.)

2010-09-11 083

  • Like Erie’s WQLN (seen earlier) Rochester, NY’s WXXI (RF16) was in fundraising mode!

2010-09-11 104

  • Even though I’m not a big sports buff, I’ve always loved seeing bits of sports on TV in the afternoons on the weekend. It always reminds me of lazy, hazy Summer-y days! (Seen on Rochester, NY’s WHEC, RF10.)

2010-09-11 187

  • While the women look pumped, it was clear that no one was more excited than Nate Berkus himself for the debut of his talk show. (Seen via Rochester, NY’s WROC, RF45.)

2010-09-11 3282010-09-11 326

September 12th brought reception of my “usual suspects” as featured below:

  • The awesome Margaret Cho popped up during Entertainment Tonight via Rochester, NY’s WHAM (RF13.) I was lucky enough to see her live when she came through Toronto on her “Cho Dependent” tour in October!

2010-09-12 205

  • De Wind was clearly rockin’ Robin during her report from the Ralph Wilson stadium. (Seen via Rochester, NY’s WHEC, RF10.)

2010-09-12 280

  • (Darling) Nikki Rudd reported on the new tailgating rules that were being enforced outside the Ralph Wilson stadium during Buffalo Bills games. Check out the second pic for some rowdy fan action.

2010-09-12 290 2010-09-12 297

  • I hadn’t seen this classic sitcom in syndication for a Long time. Cheers to WHEC for bringing it back!

2010-09-12 478

  • Syracuse, NY’s WSYR (RF17) popped up briefly for the last time in 2010. (Reception of WSYR seems to be a May to September love affair!)

2010-09-12 509

  • Erie, PA’s WSEE (RF12-3) has a big Caribbean audience, and often runs advertising that promotes tourism there. Check out the ad below to (w)see how to get a discount rate at True Blue Bay in Grenada.

2010-09-12 639

September 16th brought my first look at the new HD news on Rochester, NY’s WHAM (RF13.) I’d been anticipating the switch to HD since their Summer teaser ads about being “under construction.” The graphics are sleek and the new set looks great! Pics below feature Marty Snyder, Jennifer Johnson and Doug Emblidge.

2010-09-16 262 2010-09-16 177 2010-09-16 326 2010-09-16 330

September 17th featured some highlights from Rochester, NY’s WROC as well as the debut of The Cool TV on Buffalo, NY’s WNYO!

  • WROC’s Maureen McGuire was quite shocked that a car smashed into a house!

2010-09-17 038

  • McGuire was even more shocked that she got caught discussing stories with Matt Molloy while the camera was supposed to be on Scott Hetsko. Molloy, though, seems to have a mischievous Men At Play look on his face about getting caught! (BTW, Men At Play is totally NSFW for those who are curious.) Check out Molloy’s Twitter or Facebook fan page!

2010-09-17 102

  • The Cool TV debuted as a subchannel on Buffalo, NY’s WNYO (RF49.) It immediately filled me with nostalgia for the days when Much Music and MTV would actually play music! It’s a great station with a mix of retro and current videos, playing Divas like Madonna and Kylie Minogue, while introducing newer artists like Lenka and Sky Ferreira!

2010-09-17 2202010-09-17 216

September 18th brought my first look at Springville, NY’s WNGS (RF7) after they re-affiliated with This TV!

2010-09-18 057

September 19th was the surprise “Party In Pennsylvania” with two new stations popping up. Check out the highlights below:

  • I was flabbergasted to see Pittsburgh, PA’s WTAE (RF51) roll in for just a few minutes. I knew I wasn’t watching my normal tropo when I saw an ad for Comcast cable (most of my regular tropo channels advertise Time Warner.) WTAE is a sizeable 250 miles away from me.

2010-09-19 140

  • WTAE’s subchannel is a This TV affiliate, and I caught them running a great promo for WTAE’s Action News. Meteorologist Demetrius Ivory appears below. There’s a joke in there about Ebony & Ivory that I probably shouldn’t be thinking…

2010-09-19 148

  • The promo also featured WTAE’s morning news team Mike Clark and Kelly Frey!

2010-09-19 149

  • I was flying high with excitement upon seeing WTAE’s Sky 4 chopper!

2010-09-19 153

  • The next surprise of the night was Johnstown, PA’s WJAC (RF34) rolling in from 242 miles away with a great Judge Judy promo and station ID!

2010-09-19 171

  • WJAC also showed this scandalous intro to Entertainment Tonight where Ashton was allegedly interested in other women’s Kutchers. (In fact, “Allegedly Ashton” would make a great sitcom title!)

2010-09-19 172

September 20th brought some Rochester, Jamestown and Utica, NY highlights as featured below:

  • Drew Carey kicked up his heels during The Price Is Right on Rochester, NY’s WROC (RF45.)

2010-09-20 039

  • 3-D Woman really stood out to me with this Divalicious promo seen on Jamestown, NY’s WNYB (RF26.)

2010-09-20 068

  • Utica, NY’s WKTV (RF29) arrived with evening news. Lady Gaga was the Maine event at a rally for the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell! I have to admit I appreciate the time and effort Lady Gaga puts into supporting LGBT causes.

2010-09-20 185

  • In the house at WKTV were Jill Reale, Emma Wright and Jason Powles!

2010-09-20 311

September 21st brought a nice tropo wave with the return of WJAC from Johnstown, PA along with Rochester and Utica, NY:

  • WJAC came in with a great promo for their station, which uses the catchphrase “Coverage You Can Count On Across The Alleghenies”!

2010-09-21 075

  • Is it me, or does WJAC anchor Bill Brown looks a bit like Kent Brockman from The Simpsons?

2010-09-21 111

  • I thought WJAC’s Lauren Melvin looked way too chipper about this War Memorial until I realized she was talking about a Mannheim Steamroller concert being held there.

2010-09-21 123

  • Here’s a nice shot of Bill Brown and Lauren Melvin anchoring the WJAC morning news!

2010-09-21 128

  • The best part of this promo for WJAC’s Severe Weather Team was seeing that they have a meteorologist named Tim Tender. I imagine that he’s a sensitive guy.

2010-09-21 188

  • I also caught part of the morning news on Rochester, NY’s WHEC (RF10) where Rebecca Leclair sassily tapped Rich Caniglia’s shoulder when talking about the need for “better eating” habits. After the commercial break she mysteriously disappeared for the rest of the show. (Just kidding.) Pat McGonigle on the right stayed out of the ruckus!

2010-09-21 247

  • Utica, NY’s WKTV (RF29) also bounced in with the awesome Don Shipman! Follow him on Twitter or join his Facebook fan page.

2010-09-21 266

  • I got my second look at WHAM’s new HD newscast, and Norma Holland is shocked by the improved picture! Jennifer Johnson, though, is already over it.

2010-09-21 274

  • I think I need the City Mattress spokesman to give me a personal tour of his three convenient locations. (Seen via Rochester’s WHAM on RF13.)

2010-09-21 297

  • Rochester, NY’s WROC (RF45) also showed up with morning news featuring the awesome Brian Neudorff on weather. Check out his website WX-MAN.com and also follow him on Twitter.

2010-09-21 361

  • WROC’s Katrina Irwin exercised her right to interview fitness expert Jodi Brennan.

2010-09-21 370

September 22nd brought some unusual tropo including the return of Johnstown, PA’s WJAC! Check out the highlights below:

  • WJAC (RF34) from Johnstown, PA returned with Jay Leno and an artful tableau that even Andy Warhol would envy! It looked like Tommy Lee, Jay Leno and Betty White were part of a Madam Tussaud’s exhibit gone wrong. At any rate, it’s an interesting pic.

2010-09-22 080

  • There was an ad for WJAC’s Health Connection website on their RTV subchannel. The second pic seems appropriate, as I heart receiving their station!

2010-09-22 085 2010-09-22 090

  • I also got to see some neat station IDs for Clearfield, PA’s WPSU (RF15) which rolled in off and on through much of the night.

2010-09-22 1622010-09-22 164

  • Erie, PA’s WICU (RF12) showed a story about how John Shoup never missed school, at least until he graduated and then he bawled his eyes out.

2010-09-22 286

  • One anchor’s away (Kevin McDowell) but the WICU news is steered in the right direction by Rob Wilson and Amanda Post.

2010-09-22 291

September 23rd was the day I would be leaving for a trip to New Hampshire for JemCon, so I made sure to capture as much tropo as I could before I left! Highlights are below:

  • Erie, PA’s WICU (RF12) had station veteran Lisa Adams anchoring the morning show! (After seeing Adams rarely – if at all – in 2009, I finally got to see her a few times in 2010!)

2010-09-23 003

  • Sheesh. I know pervs will do whatever it takes to get their hands on kids, but “volume controls” is a new low! (Seen via Clearfield, PA’s WPSU, RF15.)

2010-09-23 015

  • George Lopez was shocked and appalled and promptly checked his own volume controls to make sure they weren’t turned on. (Seen via Rochester, NY’s WUHF, RF28.)

2010-09-23 094

  • Then I switched over to Rochester, NY’s WXXI (RF16) and came across this sketchy fellow. Maybe it wasn’t a good day to be watching PBS kids shows.

2010-09-23 040

  • Over on Erie, PA’s WSEE (RF12-3) I got to see Ray Petelin delivering the rainfall totals, or throwing down like a gangsta depending on how you look at the picture.

2010-09-23 072

  • I like catching News 8 Now, but on this day Rochester, NY’s WROC (RF45) only started to decode after 7am when The Early Show was on.

2010-09-23 098

  • Time was running out, and my goose was going to be cooked if I didn’t fly out the door on time! This was the last pic of tropo I took before being picked up for JemCon! (Seen via Erie, PA’s WQLN, RF50.)

2010-09-23 112

  • I was then on my way to JemCon - a convention devoted to the Truly Outrageous 80's cartoon. This year's JemCon was being held in Manchester, NH, so I convinced my friends to drive through Upstate New York to get there. We visited WKTV in Utica, NY and I was lucky enough to get a mini tour of the station! Click here for a full recap of the trip! It was surreal to actually be at WKTV only a couple of days after watching it at home!

OCTOBER

On October 5th, I finally got a good shot of the new logo used by Hamilton, ON’s CHCH (RF18.) It’s an update of the classic colour burst logo created in the 1960s, but with call letters replacing the 11 in the centre.

2010-10-05 026

On October 7th, Batavia, NY’s WPXJ (RF23) showed up with the mighty She-Ra: Princess of Power on their qubo subchannel. I adored She-Ra as a kid, and she appears as part of the qubo “Night Owl” program block that includes other 80s cartoons like He-Man!

2010-10-07 120

October 8th was a late season Mega Tropo Day with reception from Erie, PA and Cleveland, OH popping up. In fact, it was quite the “OctOHberfest.” Highlights reel as follows:

  • Erie, PA’s WICU (RF12) sent anchors Mark Soliday and Kara Coleman to New York to do promos with NBC personalities. Or to shop at Ann Taylor, as the picture below would indicate.

2010-10-08 157

  • I almost fainted when Matt Lauer suggested that he and Mark Soliday “make a Kara sandwich.” I have nothing that can top that.

2010-10-08 237

  • I always Fall for WICU whenever they pop up on my TV. Here we get a weather forecast reflecting the current season!

2010-10-08 267

  • Erie, PA’s WSEE (RF12-3) showed up with a great bumper featuring reporter Jamison Hixenbaugh.

2010-10-08 299

  • Liz Crawford almost looks like she’s saying “Oh my goodness, it is SO good to have you here today Julie!” Crawford and meteorologist Julie Coates were filling in on WSEE’s Mornings Live.

2010-10-08 312

  • Erie, PA’s WBEP (RF12-2) was running The Daily Buzz with Kia Malone in SD, but later that morning I would catch it in HD for the first time via Akron, OH’s WBNX!

2010-10-08 323

  • Cleveland, OH arrived with news from WEWS (RF15.) Pete Kenworthy made me shed a tear with a story about soda potentially being barred from purchase with food stamps. (I love me some Diet Coke.)

2010-10-08 420

  • In happier news, Kimberly Gill looks excited about a new PayPal app for the iPhone.

2010-10-08 432

  • Christine Ferreira delivers weather with a rich, radio ready tone and the glamour of Gloria Estefan. She’s kind of awesome. Also check out Toronto on the map behind her!

2010-10-08 448

  • I bet that Patty Harkens back to the times when traffic jams weren’t so crazy!

2010-10-08 462

  • I really hope that the Calvetta Bros Floor Show involves some form of stripping…er...of the old tiles on your floor, of course. Not even gonna ask if hardwood makes an appearance during their “show.” (Seen via Cleveland, OH’s WKYC on RF17.)

2010-10-08 483

  • Speaking of stripping and floor shows, here’s the real money shot! A gorgeous logo of Cleveland’s WKYC (RF17) up close and personal!

2010-10-08 495

  • I was bound to like WKYC’s Chris Tye, but also enjoyed decking the halls with boughs of Hollie (Strano, that is!)

2010-10-08 496

  • Pat Butler is on call to serve up the traffic reports for WKYC.

2010-10-08 535

2010-10-08 561

  • Erie, PA’s Press and Tower did a blog post about NBC’s Education Nation project, which was designed to bring attention to the US education crisis. Press and Tower cited Buffalo’s WGRZ and Cleveland’s WKYC as two of the stations attempting to cover it from a local angle.

2010-10-08 591

  • In the future, it appears that people board giant spaceships to watch Dr. Phil.

2010-10-08 594

  • Speaking of futuristic spaceships, it looks like Hollie Strano is controlling her forecasts from a Star Trek-ian weather surveillance deck. (I’d love to see someone dressed as a giant storm cloud try to intrude, only for Hollie to zap them with a laser pointer!)

2010-10-08 605

  • WEWS got their claws out for a monstrous report about the home opening game featuring the Lake Erie Monsters hockey team!

2010-10-08 610

  • If WEWS’ Christine Ferreira reminds me of Gloria Estefan, then WKYC’s Hollie Strano reminds me of Sandra Bullock! I enjoyed both of their forecasts, and Hollie’s Facebook fan page is fun (and very caffeinated – Girl loves her flavoured coffees!)

2010-10-08 648

  • Cleveland’s Spanish language Univision affiliate WQHS (RF34) was reporting on the efforts to rescue the trapped Chilean mine workers. (The rescue would take place only days later.)

2010-10-08 676

  • I also got to see Cleveland, OH’s WUAB (RF28) showing religious rock star Joseph Prince. (WUAB is one of the Cleveland stations I remember picking up in analog as a kid at least as far back as 1988.)

2010-10-08 687

  • Speaking of 1980s nostalgia, WUAB’s This TV subchannel was running a cartoon I loved as a kid – Heathcliff!

2010-10-08 695

  • Akron, OH’s WBNX (RF30) rolled in and brought my first viewing of The Daily Buzz in HD!

2010-10-08 702

  • There was a great live shot of Cleveland seen via WEWS (RF15.)

2010-10-08 742

  • Hamilton, ON’s CHCH (RF18) was solid in the afternoon with Bob Cowan, Annette Hamm and Matt Hayes. Oddly, I don’t get CHCH regularly even though it’s relatively close to me. That may change when the Canadian DTV transition happens and it reverts to RF11.

2010-10-08 770

October 9th brought a small wave of tropo from Rochester, NY and Erie, PA. Check out these highlights:

  • Rochester, NY’s WXXI (RF16) ran their “Be More” promo that features the legendary Carol Channing. Rochester’s own Pandora Boxx does a fabulous impression of Carol that my pal Mr. A captured during our trip to the flower city in November 2010. Pandora liked the shot so much she made it her Facebook profile pic!

2010-10-09 018

  • Promoters were hoping that lots of bodies would turn up for the CSI exhibit at the Rochester Museum & Science Center. They also hoped that attendance would be high. (Seen via Rochester, NY’s WUHF, RF28.)

2010-10-09 085

  • Afternoon football appeared on Rochester’s WROC (RF45) slightly pixellated, but with a great station ID at the bottom right!

2010-10-09 089

  • I hope Charlie Sheen gets to the bottom of his problems. At least he looks ready to receive some tough love from those around him. (Seen via Rochester, NY’s WUHF, RF28.)

2010-10-09 192

  • The Create subchannel of Erie, PA’s WQLN (RF50) gave visual proof that the tropo was tasty in early October!

2010-10-09 381

October 10th provided some nice tropo from Erie, PA, Detroit, MI as well as Utica and Rochester, NY. Highlights are as follows:

  • Erie, PA’s WICU (RF12) arrived with Lisa Adams anchoring the repeat of Weekends Now. They were covering the Oktoberfest at St. Joseph’s Church, located at the sassily named Sassafras St.

  • Utica, NY’s WKTV (RF29) made an appearance with a Fuccillo Chevrolet ad.

  • Ride The E is either a slogan for drug users, or a catchy nickname for the Erie Metro Transit Authority’s website. (Seen via Erie, PA’s WQLN-S1, RF50-2.)

  • Detroit, MI popped up with WMYD (RF21) running an acne infomercial. If you ask me, things cleared up when she threw on that ruffly pink top and discoed down.

  • Detroit, MI’s WDIV (RF45) had early Sunday news with Lauren Sanders looking concerned about midnight grocery runs. (My advice? Go 4 it!)

2010-10-10 222

  • I was Falling for the colourful report from WDIV’s meteorologist Brandon Roux. I would love it if it turned out that he was the less eccentric brother of electro pop singer La Roux. She sings the song “Bulletproof,” which would seem approp….er…not gonna go there.

  • Gail Anderson was revved up to give us the traffic reports for the Motor City!

  • Check out the awesome news van in this WDIV promo!

  • Here’s a great pic of the Local 4 morning news team on Sunday with Brandon Roux, Lauren Sanders and Gail Anderson.

  • If more men treated Winter like the guy below, I would complain a lot less about the cold! At any rate I was happy to be exposed to this ep of Globe Trekker seen on Rochester, NY’s WXXI (RF16.)

2010-10-10 471

  • I saw meteorologist Amanda McDonald on the weather subchannel of Rochester, NY’s WHEC (RF10-2.) I haven’t seen her on any newscasts yet, just occasionally on WHEC’s subchannel on the weekends.

October 12th warmed me up with a tiny pinch of Cleveland, OH’s WEWS (RF15) featuring the Divatastic Maurielle Lue right before the big Cleveland burst the following day.

October 13th brought a late season Cleveland Burst with four stations rolling in from Ohio! Check out another round of OctOHber below:

  • Cleveland’s WEWS (RF15) showed up with midday news featuring the legendary Leon Bibb and the smoking hotness of Jason Nicholas.

2010-10-13 016

  • WEWS, along with many other stations, covered the amazing rescue of the Chilean mine workers that was happening that day! It was great to see such a triumphant and successful story play out.

2010-10-13 022

  • I love to capture great station logo shots, and WEWS was definitely on my side this day!

2010-10-13 030

  • WEWS has an infotainment segment called Spotlight 5 hosted by Sally Spitz. (It would be great if she had a rival named Suzanne Swallowz battling her for the Spotlight each week!)

2010-10-13 037

  • Cleveland’s WKYC (RF17) was showing Days of Our Lives, while Doppler/Satellite radar was on their weather subchannel.

2010-10-13 1152010-10-13 057

  • WUAB (RF43) was in order with their showing of America’s Court with Judge Ross.

2010-10-13 070

  • My jaw dropped when I saw the plaintiff’s name. Destiny Shores sounds more like it could be the name of an adult film actress, a tawdry nighttime soap, or a moniker for a new musical group. Hopefully her case floats and doesn’t get washed away by the defendant’s claims!

2010-10-13 091

  • WUAB’s This TV subchannel was running the movie Cast A Giant Shadow. This TV pulls most of their films from the MGM library.

2010-10-13 073

  • WQHS (RF34) was showing live coverage of the Chilean miners’ rescue as it took place. It was neat to see Spanish language coverage of the amazing event.

2010-10-13 095

  • At this point they were counting how many miners had been successfully rescued versus how many were left on the bottom of the screen.

2010-10-13 102

  • Erie, PA’s WQLN (RF50) came in at night with this beautiful image from the series God In America.

2010-10-13 134

October 29th brought the debut of The Country Network as a subchannel of Buffalo, NY’s WUTV (RF14.) They had a few problems with their PSIP abbreviation, though, going from the unintentionally hilarious CNT to CNTV, before finally settling on TCN.

To close out the month I posted my 2010 Halloween roundup on October 30th featuring tons of spooky pics from Erie, PA, Cleveland, OH and Rochester, NY among other cities!

That wraps up Part Three of my 2010 Year In Review! Stay tuned to TV Garth for the conclusion, coming shortly!
